  • Sanding & Painting Questions

I had a problem and this thread may explain it:

Hi everyone, I'll get right to it. I have a 1977 Pontiac Catalina which really has no issues and under 65000 miles, I picked it up from a woman whose husband passed and it was his garage baby. The chrome and colored plastic side body molding was coming detached in areas and not looking 100% so I began removing it. The foam

I am now planning on fixing the problem and I have questions.

I have never painted a vehicle excluding flat black spray can work.

I will be doing a Rustoleum roll on two tone on the car, lower half black and upper factory.

    My questions are this:

    1) Between coats is 1500grit good

    2) After final coat is 2000 grit good

    3) To buff out the paint can i use one of those small one hand random orbit polishers or do i need one of the larger polishers?

    4) Do i use rubbing compound or polishing compound with the polisher?

In case you have not seen the Rustoleum jobs youtube has quite a few and they turn out pretty nice for the $$

I should only have $200 into paint and tools to complete the job, I really cant afford $2k + so this is how its gonna be done.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Re: Sanding & Painting Questions

    Check out this thread:
Well it finally happened - the hood of my mustang which I used to learn the rotary on finally oxidized so badly I had to do something. Hot Rod magazine did an article on how to paint your car with Rustoleum and a foam roller...so I thought I'd give it a try! With Gloss Black (what did I get myself into???) Here's what I

    For some of your questions:
    3) Your going to want more than an orbital to polish out the paint. Either a DA like the porter cable, meguiars g110, or the griots tool or a rotary to remove sanding marks.

    4) If you're talking specifically about meguiars rubbing compound and polishing compound that are in the plastic container are both hand use only products. You will want to use a relatively aggressive cleaner like ultimate compound or M105 to remove the sanding marks. Then follow up with a polish to refine your finish.
