  • Paint Peel Repair

This hood was resprayed about 6 years ago. The badge wasn't removed and the area under the badge wasn't prepped properly. this started to peel about a year ago. I had some paint left from about 2/3 years ago when I was making an exhaust cutaway. It was still okay, but just needed thinned. The paint color is a bit different, but given a month or two will darken a little. It will not be perfect, but better.

What I did was to sand down the peeled area, apply new color, then some clearcoat.I used a small air pen and can of air which was a little difficult to regulate. So,on one side is not blended as well. After a week,I sanded down the excess and then buffed the hood.

There are still a couple of these little jobs to do. One similair on the bumper, underneath the headlight. There are a couple of points on the edge of the hood where I can only asume was damaged by someone with a buffer in the shop or was like that many years ago.I can't remember. I'll be using the same process to do these jobs.

I notice that paint is sort of like the dead skin on your body.

Once it starts peeling, you want to trim it down ASAP before more is peeled away!!!

Thanks. If you go really close you can see the difference. As long as it looks okay from standing distance,i'm happy. If I could've gotten the paint color closer,i think it would be hard to notice, even at close range.

The smooth, deep gloss of the hood pulls the focus away from the repair. That kind of makes me jealous. Ever since I had my hood repainted, I had only hit it with sandpaper and M105 with a cutting pad. Without M205 (the polishing oil may hinder the curing process of the gloss) and a couple layer of wax, the hood looks hideous right now.

Again, that deep gloss on your hood is awesome!

Nicely done, Eddie! Any color mismatch or less than perfect finishing is certainly masked in these photos. Given how particular many of us are about these things, one might suspect that only you know where to look to see anything that isn't quite perfect. The casual or even somewhat picky observer would most likely never know that a problem ever existed in the first place!

hard to say how long,as i didn't do it all in one day. Sanding down the peel and then painting was possibly 2 hours? Then I had to wait a week for it to harden. There was quite a bit of clear to remove,so a bit of sanding with ,800,..1200,...1500,then 2000grit. Then wool pad followed by fine foam. That part took longest, because although it felt flat I had to repeat the stage as it didn't look quite right.

Thanks Michael. I have to admit though,I get away with this because of the badge and being on the hood. When the badge is off you see the color mismatch. As soon as you put it on it is hidden. If it was anywhere else on the hood,it wouldn't have worked. I took another nice shot today of the hood. I havn't put any TechWax2 yet.
