  • Wet sand / side trim attached

    Gang,

The '66 Dodge D100 is being worked on and picutures as I go have been snapped for a future Show Off, it's a SS paint and dark blue and so far, Rotary and G100 work with M80 has worked marvelous. I am at the stage of polishing the minute swirls out with the PC then polish with M07 and M16 (going to give a can to the boy after showing how to use it).

The picture below shows what is below the side trim along side the truck. It definately feels raised and appears to be thick paint that has gathered on the trim on a repaint (I don't think trim was removed). I thought of sanding but the paint is very thin and the ridge is very small, I hit it with the rotary and M80 with 8006 pad hoping to knock it down after a claying and it softened it but did not knock it down. Hopefully you can see the parts

The truck will be repainted some day and the trim will probably cover it (the trim will be polished as well)

Just welcoming some thoughts. I am not experienced with sanding but have read a ton on it and watched the videos a ton (5 video series) and not afraid to try starting with a high grit.

I don't own a plastic scraper which I thought it could be accumalated wax from Great Grandpa waxing the old girl in the past, but family said he never waxed it. Old work truck.

    Thanks

    Aaron

After buffing the paint out are you going to put the trim back on?

yes, there was a repaint on the tops of the truck (rails, down about 6-8", hood and drivers door, looks bad).

I thought of trying to sand the bad parts, looks like bondo job with deep sanding marks, shabby paint job. Below is a somewhat how it's turning out.

And a teaser pix of the hood. I know, the bondo is cracking and the paint is "falling" off.

This is what I started with

After washing: the trim above I believe was repainted and the paint is not reacting to the paint like it is under the trim. I may try a test spot with paper and go from there......

It's looking good, M80 is the go-to product for restoring neglected single stage paints.

What you're doing is defined as,

"Taking your car's finish to its maximum potential"

And that's simply taking what you have and making it looks it's best. Often times it's not practical or even in the family budget to have a secondary car painted, so instead you just do the best you can with what you have to work with and that's the idea of taking a car's finish to it's maximum potential.

As for the ridges in the paint, if your going to re-install the trim the just do a good job of cleaning, polishing and wax the paint around these ridges and then let it go. It's not going to affect the big picture and after you put the trim back on no one's going to notice.

          KISS

          Keep it Simple Simon

              I figured as much.

I plan on doing a full polish on the trim and repaint the center (that's what the boy wants) and have a mounting system in the works to mount the trim on saw horses and a 2X4 and hit it with Rotary and/or G100.

It's really looking good and M07/M16 is looking good

Thanks Mike, it's raining but plan on finishing my next days off (paint at least) on Sun/Mon/Tues

Looks good. No matter how many times I see it, I am still amazed at just how well single stage comes back to life.

Look to a full write up coming next week or after (want to do the trim as well).

Thanks for the kind words and encouragment, it's been fun teaching the lad how to polish.....After all it's his truck.
