Sorry for the late reply, guys. My computer's been down for a while. Here are the pics of my "soft" looking paint.

Notice the rear is sharp and glossy--the way it should be... then as you start going towards the front of the car, the paint gets dull...

The hood looks like this in some spots... looks like bad prepping beneath the paint?

Based on the last three photos, I'd say that the affected areas should be repainted -- base and clear. Otherwise you are going to have real shiny rough paint.

On your reflections shots try and use the sun or a good halogen light in the pics. As you can see from Mike's first picture it really helps to bring out all the paint defects or sometimes even the flash from your camera can work.
Derrick, any chance you know which products, tools, and pads were used to achieve the results on that blue-ish purple paint? Looks great...

I have a black 1998 E39 and I believe it is single stage.

Are you the original owner of the car? Were the two doors repainted before?

This looks to me like body filler that was poorly finished. You can see the sanding marks. I think this is a definite repaint.

Hey guys it's been a while. I am not the original owner and the car has had some shoddy body work done throughout its life. Lucky me. As a last ditch resort before repainting... I am going to try wetsanding with 1500 grit sandpaper then M105 by hand. I will try this on the 2 doors. The doors don't have that rough finish the hood does like in the above pic. But keep in mind the above pic makes it look worse than it really is. The above pic is representative of only one small portion of the side of the hood. The rest looks smooth, just not shiny. I'll giveit a try and post my results!!!

If it works on the doors, I'll have the hood resprayed

By the way would you guys recommend 1500 grit or 2000 grit? Primarily for the doors as in the above pics? Mind you i'll be removing by hand with M105... i really don't have money for a backing plate for my Vector Rotary right now LOL

Looking at the last few pics you posted, I would guess that the reason your paint isn't as clear or glossy all around is because of all the orange peel (At least I think its orange peel) from the repaint. Wetsanding followed by a multi-step polishing procedure may fix this, I'd recommend you try and make it to one of the open garages at Meguiar's, and have the Pros look into it.

My eyes tell me there is 100% for sure body work done here. Also, it appears that some of the pics may indicate some fairly well set oxidation as well.

The texture matching is, well, non-existent.

Have you taken a light colored polishing or cutting pad with a cleaner wax to the paint in the dull areas to see if it pulls black paint off when polished? My guess is that horribly oxidized area is single stage- but I suppose it might be clear coated too.

IMO, to get this right you will need to start over on those panels...but you can always give it a shot first!

That is a really bad case of orange peel.... but no worries.... wetsanding will level out the peels and you should have a shine very close to the other panels..... but being on both doors and fender and hood i'd say this is too big a job for a beginner if you care to keep the paint bc wetsanding is easy to damage paint beyond saving if you over do it.... and also you dont really know how much paint is on the panel..... paint thickness gauges would be great help when wetsanding

The key is first identifying if it is single or two stage paint- attempting to get after THAT much texture difference by sanding could easily lead to clear coat failure if it is indeed two stage.

Either way, a paint depth gauge would be almost required before tackling something like that at all.
