  • Black NA Needs Some Help :(

Hey what's up everyone,I've been checking out this forum for the past 2 months and have got lots of helpful tips,But I still need some help and suggestions. I recently re-painted my front bumper and lip on my 1994 Mazda Mx-5 because a truck backed into my front bumper and removed lots of paint ,The whole car got painted about a year and a half ago with SS,just so you guys know what im working with here. The car never got color sanding after I got it painted and since i was going to color sand the front bumper once it cured I thought "might as well color sand the whole car",so I began to color sanding with he usual 1500-2000 then got my buffer out and hit it with some rubbing compound from 3M,it managed to take out some small scratched from the sanding but of course there are still those heavy scratched that are in there,I went and bought some Meguiars #84 and started to try and buff them out with your average wool pad but the reaming scratches still didn't completely come out,so now im here asking for suggestions on some more products,I am also leaning on buying a rotary(Besides Dewalt and Makita what else is a good rotary buffer/polisher?) and some good Maguires pads(what do you guys suggest?)I also want to polish the car and wax it after(what do you guys suggest?) The DA isn't cutting it for harder jobs like this . I know black is a hard color to work with so,your experience and feedback would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Below are a few pictures of the reaming scratches(Please excuse the quality of the pictures and the dirty car,I would like to thank the lovely tree that is under my car for the mess)

Ok to start i would like to clarify some things. If i am reading this correct than you are using a DA with a wool pad to try and remove the sanding marks correct? If this is correct then you will have to switch to a rotary. The DA just does not have the power to completely remove sanding marks and I'm not 100% but i don't think the wool pad is recommended for use with the DA. I would also like to ask if you are familiar with using a rotary machine? If not than you may want to step back for a second and think about getting a professional to come by and buff out the car for you because i only like to recommend using a rotary if you are familiar and comfortable with it. Some people like to start learning with spare car parts you can pick up at some body shops and then move onto your car once you have a feel for the machine. As for products and pads if you are going to get a rotary then you will most likely need a list of pads like the W4000 wool pad, W7000 foam cutting pad, W8000 foam polishing pad, W9000 Finishing pad. Also #80 is a good all around product to have in your arsenal as well as #83, #84, #85 and Megs new #105. On most occasions people can handle most little projects with something like #80 but for something like the project you have ahead you will want to look into the wool or foam cutting pad w/ #84 or #85 which is what i use. I cant give you an exact recommendation because every paint is different and i don't know how hard your paint is and how easily it will be to remove these sanding marks. Just always keep in mind to work with the least aggressive method first and work your way up. Hope this helps

Yeah unfortunately I don't have a rotary simply cause i never needed one, I have used one on other cars but I cant call my self a professional and don't do this for a living(Just another hobby),the reason im thinking of buying one is simply to have in my collection and use on diffrent cars or any time needed in the future for heavy jobs like this. i definitely agree with the fact that a DA does not give enough power to get these scratches completely out as we can see,the only reason i tried a wool pad was because well it wouldn't hurt to try, instead of going and buying lots of useless products,I wanted some feedback and suggestions from everyone as to how i should attack this job and have a great polished gloss looking paint job. Thanks for the recommendations on pads, any specific links as to great deals and prices where i can get some of the things listed above?
