Well I will try to make a long story short.
I have a BMW 540i that has had one accident, but was very well maintained and is in perfect mechanical condition. The PO previous owner was spending around 500 per month is maintenance and could no longer afford the maintenance at one of the USA's most expensive Stealers. So he sold the car...My win.
But in spite of the mechanical perfection the body has some chips and scratches. Me being the cheapskate that I am decided I can fix this...so I set out on the average DIY path. I do all my own maintenance too so I have a host of tools, grinders, buffers, sanders, compressor etc.
The first 2 paint chips I did with a 'blobber' touch up paint with a brush, wet sanded em smooth and then used the touch up clear and it didn't turn out to bad.
So the next thing I have more chips on the hood. I decided to take a slightly different approach, talked to some people I work with (I work at an auto manufacturer) and one of the guys said hey rather than spend big bucks on getting new paint equipment just go get an airbrush and it should more than handle the little chips and scratches...so I did.
I went to the local auto paint supply house got my color (titanium silver), reducer, clear and hardner. Took it home and started to 'get er done'. Well now I have a big blotch on one side of my hood that doesn't look good...it simply doesn't match. Rather than make matter worse I decided to give you guys a shot before I cave in and have someone else do it...
I really 'need' to acquire this skill set so if you guys cannot guide me through it I will go to the local community college and take a couple courses on auto body repair and car painting...which is doable. I just know those guys aren't rocket scientists and those skills can be had for some sweat sacrifice and I am willing to do the work myself.
At this point right now I am almost of the opinion that I will need to repaint the entire hood...which I am not afraid of, (to get the right flow of paint) but want to make sure it is going to turn out right. I have a good place to paint in my garage and all the stuff necessary with a few little acquisitions.
So is this project to much for the forum or should I go back to class?
Thanks in advance!
