  • Oxidation on Black paint

Hello All: I am looking for the best solution short of repainting for my 1997 Altima. The car is Black and is showing signs of clearcoat failure. When I wash it, I must wax it to give the color a shine espiacially on the hood, roof and trunk of the car. Even after waxing it I still see the dull look within a few days. I bought the car in MD and have now live in FL. The car is no longer kept in the gargage because of excercise equipment. Someone suggested wet sanding but I am not sure. I want to do it myself and am a weekend warrior. What should I do?

There really is no way to fix clear coat failure. The only thing you can do is keep the paint polished and waxed so that you try to slow down the spread of the failure.

Africanson1.... The title is Oxidation but you mention CC failure both problems or just the CC failure?

Yeah, I'm a little confused here too. Theres a definate difference between clear coat failure and oxidation.

Here's an extreme example of clearcoat failure, which can only be fixed with a repaint:

And heres a picture of an oxidized finish:

If its oxidized, you can use a paint cleaner such as ScratchX or #80 Speed Glaze. Perhaps that salty FL air is creating the haze. Such was the case after I drove my car down to our "now condemned/destroyed" beach house for a couple weeks. Perhaps you should garage it again.
