I was trying to use my old rotary on the boat and also tried to work product by hand, it had a little bit of oxidation and just wasn't as bright as it used to be...I tried using a light wool pad and some #44 color restorer I worked a small section and it brightened up a little bit...but I only worked it a short time...So I continued down the boat and thought I was doing good...but noticed when I looked at the finish it was looking hazy...So I thought I must need to work the product longer...it says on the bottle work until almost dry...continued on down the side a little bit...but decided to stop cause it just looked hazy and then put a halogen on it and it looks swirled pretty bad...now I need to know what I can do to removed the swirls?...and what should I do different to prevent more swirls? I plan on changing to a much lighter foam pad. Also we checked a spot that my brother did by hand and it looked swirled as well???

If #44 is not cutting it, you may have to go more aggressive like #49, #67 is pretty strong so be careful with that.....

edit: To add, you may have to use a stronger product then finish with a less aggressive product to clean that up....
Do you have the Marine Cleaner wax #50?
The Color Restorer may be leaving hazing and may have to clean that up with the 50 before going to a stronger product.....
Also, try going to a less aggressive pad, the wool light cutting pad may be the cause of your hazing, you could try a 8 series pad (8006/8207) and see where that lands you.....Philippians 2:14 - Do all things without grumbling or questioning,Comment

Ya I think that might be the problem i'm trying to find a place I can get a lighter pad, and an inexperienced rotary operator not helping. I was thinking I pry should have just used the 50' to begin with and called it good but I had read that it takes a little more aggressive combo on gelcoat but think I went a little to aggressive...i'll try to grab some picsOriginally posted by Nappers View PostComment

I do quite a few boats and never have swirls in it. I know it is not designed for it but use Ultimate Compound and a wool pad on a rotary. I use about 3/4 of a bottle on a 20ft boat. I apply it on my wool pad move it around in about a 2x2 square and make 2-3 passes up and down and then side to side. I then use a clean microfiber and wipe the excess off. I do the whole boat and then will go over it lightly with 205 on a yellow polishing pad. I will then top it off with Megs Boat wax. I've done about every color of boat and never had any swirls.

A wool pad is going to have a higher potential for inflicting swirls even while eliminating oxidation, scratches, etc. How you use that pad (machine speed, arm speed, angle, etc) will play into it as well. Your thought to follow with a foam pad is correct, just make sure to run the machine at a fairly low speed (900 -1200rpm depending on how the surface reacts) and keep the pad flat on the surface. Also, don't move that machine in fast, sweeping motions - take your time, just don't dwell on a given area for any period of time.
What yanks_178 says makes perfect sense and follows along with the comments above. Take your time with it, you'll be fine.
Keep in mind that if your brother is getting similar results when working by hand, those swirls may well have been there before you started and you're basically exposing them now. You may find that a slightly more aggressive product like M49 Oxidation Remover is called for in this instance.
