  • Playing with the idea of getting a rotary

    Hello everyone!

I have been thinking about getting a rotary for a little while. I would just get the same size backing plate to fit my 7.5" pads to make it convenient. I have a few questions now. What practice steps should i take before actually buffing a cars paint?

    Second question. Is this garbage?

( i know were not supposed to put links in but i knew no one would know what I was talking about. Mods, please remove if i broke the rule. I apologize if I did.

    Thanks

I have been thinking about getting the same unit. Can't beat the price. I have heard good things about this from other forums. It's a low grade unit, but I guess it works well if your not going to use it constantly. I only want it to do my hood and roof. I had to have it repainted after an unfortunate incident and I just can't get the paint quite right with my Porter-Cable.

I think there has been a couple people pick one up form Harbor Freight.... Don in the post below picked one up and had some very good results. Look around for his posts talked about using a junk yard hood and so on. Who know he might see this post.

          Hey,

I have seen a lot of talk lately regarding that rotary. It may not be built like the Makita or the Dewalt, but for the person that will only do their own vehilces a few times a year, it will probably work just fine!

Yep, I saw the post... So far, I have't regretted spending the 30 some dollars on the rotary from Harbor Freight (got it on sale @ $24.99). With my limited experience with it, it's slower than the PC BUT i do seem to be getting better results with LESS aggresive products.

            Right now the standings are:

PC: faster, but more aggresive products needed

Rotary: Slower, but better results with milder products

              Hi Greg,

As others have commented, numerous posts have been made about this polisher and all/most of them have been positive as far as the operation and reliability. Hard to beat the price.

Not sure about the above polishers/buffer but the Wal-mart near me had a Coleman Powermate 6 in. orbitial polisher/buffer for 15 bucks. It should do the trick on a cheap budject

I can't speak for he polisher but I had the $25.00 grinder and it was slow but ok. I used it almost daily @ work for about three weeks and it decided to retire. Still for 25 bucks it wasn"t bad

I've had a few people "in the business" (body shops) tell me that for the average enthusiast detailing their own car and perhaps a few cars on the side, these buffers are a good deal. They said however that for professional shop use, they would last about a week.

Don... can you vary the speed on this buffer? Is there a dial like the PC or just the trigger switch?

'Soft start' trigger with speed dial (like the PC)
