  • my car in danger of premature cc failure?

ok i read on another thread that if too much clear is removed it can lead to this...what does this mean? does it mean right away u will see the basecoat or primer? or will the clear be just really thin and maybe in danger in the future?

how many mils does the clear coat have to at least have to be good? like 1?1.5?

reason i ask is cus my cars a 2000 and i wetsanded it 3 months ago with 1000grit and 2000 to reduce orangepeel and just to have a mirror like finish...my friend buffed everything out really nice with a rotary...paint looks incredible...but could it be possible we removed too much clear?

if it is in danger wat can i do? i already wash weekly and wax once a month.

can i still use a light cleaner polish such as UP or 205 once a year or so ?

Is this on a factory clear coat?

I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.

    I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.
    Remove swirls my friends.

Factory clear coats are usually around 2 mils . You need about 1.2 -1.5 mils for proper protection of your base coat.

If you're close to the borderline regular maintenance with mild products (no heavy cleaners) with less aggressive application (no rataries) would extend your clear coat life. I would just regularly gently polish it and always keep wax on.

Did you meter your paint thickness after wet sanding?

What's done is done. If you have the opportunity to check thickness, by all means do so. If not, just do your best to keep the finish in good shape in order to avoid the need for future heavy correction. As Mike P. says, "use the least aggressive product necessary to get the job done".

Practically all manufacturers these days say that if you remove more than 0.5mil of clear that a full refinishing is called for (Ford states 0.3mil). If you didn't measure paint thickness before and after wet sanding then you have no real idea how much clear you removed.

Odds are if you removed most of the orange peel you're probably border line. But as has been said, what's done is done so make the best of it. That means be extremely careful when washing and drying so as to minimize the creation of new swirls. The fewer swirls you create the less often you need to buff them out. If you keep the car well waxed and it is not exposed to extreme conditions for extended periods, which might be hard to do in Vegas, you might be OK. Or you might not. Only time will tell.

Just keep your car out of the sun and you'll be fine. No biggie.
