  • Bought a NEW rotary polisher...and it looks just like a Makita!

Maybe that's why it's called a NEWKITA! I was at a local reseller store last Tuesday called GTM (General Trade Merchandise), a chain of 2 stores based only in San Diego.

If the packaging on returned items is compromised, or the product (like a camera or LCD TV) was used, retailers like CostCo and Sam's Club does not return it to the shelves. Instead they warehouse it with other returns and auction it to resellers every 2-4 weeks. GTM is one of those resellers, and they purchase goods at auction from other retailers as well.

I frequent GTM every so often because they usually have great gear such as clothes, hardware, electronics, tools, furniture, food and miscellaneous items for sale at some pretty deep discounts. I always visit their automotive aisle to score some cheap detailing supplies. Sometimes they have something great, sometimes nothing.

I spotted this rotary polisher in that same aisle. It looked out of place because it was a power tool and it was the only one. At first I laughed when I saw the obvious imitated Makita graphics on the box, and went out to my car to grab my cell phone to snap a couple of photos. But after I picked up the box, I noticed the heft was pretty decent so i removed the polisher for a better look. I was surprised at how much this polisher looked like a Makita 9227C. The materials didn't seem cheap, so I took a chance and bought it.

Notice the Makita copied badges! I did some online research but couldn't find out much about Newkita. What I did find was that they are a huge tool manufacturer in China and they copy designs of popular Japanese power tools for export. One of the downturns of emerging Chinese capitalism is that international copyright laws are not enforced.

Imitation is copied down to the offset bale handle (The handle is not secured with the provided bolts, I just wanted to take a quick photo) and the spindle lock button. For you Makita owners, some of the cosmetic differences should be apparent. The exhaust vents are horizontal, I think Makita has vertical vents.

I took it to the post office this morning and weighed the device. It clocked in at 6.2 lbs, compared to the Makita's listed weight of 6.6 lbs. The metal head and plastic body housing is heavyweight and solid. 6 foot power cord - I think the same length as the Makita.

The speed range is between 0-3000 RPM. The dial is similar to Makita, but there are again cosmetic differences. Like the Makita, the Newkita RPM ramps up from a slow start.

I took this photo for scaling purposes, placing it next to my DeWally rotary polisher and my Maguire's D/A The motor whine has a higher pitch than my DeWalt, and the noticeable torque doesn't become apparent until I hit the higher RPM's (the DeWalt has noticeable torque at even the lower RPM range).

LOL! This is the listed price on the box, but I'll bet this polisher never sold for more than $75 max anywhere. The kicker? Remember, I bought this at a reseller so I paid $38. Had I waited another two days, I could have used an online GTM coupon and saved another $11, but this was the only one and I didn't want to risk it being gone. For $38, if the Newkita quits on me during the first use it won't be a big loss. And it did come with extra brushes.

Whats next? Jony stereos? Londa Civics? Or worst yet Macguiars polishing products lol! Yikes! I don't understand why this junk in even allowed in the US or Canada. Good luck. I hope it works for years to come but I would'nt get my hopes up.

Of course not. And $38 was almost a deal breaker, but not quite. If anything, it will be a fun thing to bring to the next TNOG in March if I keep it. I ramped it up last night and was pleasantly surprised at the smooth operation I experienced from the Newkita. The motor whine does have a higher pitch than my DeWalt, but not higher than my G110.

One thing I keep in mind is that Chinese manufacturing costs are a fraction of US and Japanese costs, so a low price does not necessarily translate into junk, although I will never state or believe that this polisher is anywhere near the equal of the Makita in quality or utility. It will get plenty of practice on junkyard body panels before it ever touches a real car.

Re: Bought a NEW rotary polisher...and it looks just like a Makita!

Heres a lil story from our local paper. Just pointing out a good deal is not always a good deal from a re-seller. BTW I would of bought the polisher to.

The motorcycle seat bar stools seemed like the perfect way to jazz up his garage. But Jody Topley had no idea one of the stools was a ticking time bomb.

While on the phone last Friday, he was shocked when one of the stools exploded less than a metre away.

“There was pretty big fireball, like probably about the size of a fitness ball, three feet in diameter.

“There was just a huge percussion, like a giant bang. It blew stuff off the walls in my garage.”

The blast scorched his wrist, partially melted his shirt and burned his pants. Tiny chunks of plastic were also shot into his leg.

“I’ve still got marks there. It looks like I got shot with a shotgun almost.

“It made a helluva bunch of smoke in the garage.”

Topley bought six of the $99 Allied Custom Cycle Stool seats about two weeks ago from a small re-sale outlet in-------------.
He has since done some research and found the distributor in the U.S. Their representative told him stools of that design had been recalled two years ago from the Chinese manufacturer.

Bianca Amor, who owns the seven supercentres said she has pulled the stools off the sales floor while she looks into the problem.

Amor said on Thursday that she has been trying to reach the distributor to get more information on the products. The stools she purchased were not old stock but had been reproduced by a Chinese manufacturer.

“So I am not really sure what’s happening there but I’m going to get hold of them tonight as well.”

Topley found a website where other owners talked about the seats and a recall letter sent by Sam’s Club customers in 2008 to return similar seats.

Apparently, the shock absorber-like pole the seat sits on was the cause of the problem. Somehow, a chemical got mixed in with the nitrogen in the shock, creating an explosive mixture, he said.

“It’s sensitive to pressure, any kind of heat, even warm heat.”

When he looked closer, the seat does carry a warning underneath to keep away from heat or cigarettes, which he thought was a little odd for a bar stool. The seat that blew also had a defect. The shock leaked and the seat slowly settled if someone sat on it.

The distributor is sending him some boxes to ship them back and they are giving him new stools and reimbursing him for the cost of the stools.

Topley said he’s worried someone else could be put at risk.

“I got hurt, but God forbid if someone got killed, like if a little kid was around the stool. I can only imagine.

“I just want people to be aware that these stools are still out there and they’re damned dangerous.”

LOL! Good PoV. I'll be sure to wear protective goggles and a Kevlar vest the first time I remove wetsanding marks with the Newkita!

I admit that I bought the polisher just to photograph it to post up on MOL for a laugher thread, but the Newk (See? I've already nick-named it. Confounded thing is this close to becoming a pet) is slowly growing on me.

What started out as a gag prop for this thread is now starting to impress me with it's potential. I wouldn't want this to be my go-to rotary, but like my Porter Cable 7336, I may hang onto it as a supplementary polisher to my DeWalt. It cost less than a parking ticket and may yet prove to be more fun.

And while I nearly passed on the idea of owning a Chinese made polisher, I suddenly remembered that my G110v2 is manufactured in the same country of origin, albeit with undoubtedly stricter quality control.

i bougt a chinese rotary here in chile just to be able to work until i buy my makita/dewalt, but its still my only rotary in the toolbox, it has worked great for all kinds of work, and i give it alot of abuse its been about 3 months of use and still going strong, the only thing is the gears are making noise but for the cheap price i paid for it, it had helped alot.

My $40 Harbor Freight rotary is still going strong, cheap rotaries are not always worthless.
