  • First try with the new rotary

Hello everyone, I hope everyone is having a good weekend
I posted in detailing101 that I just received the Makita I ordered. Well today I got started and was looking for some feed back about my process. I have a salvage hood but it is at my parents home so I decided to practice on the hood of my work vehicle. The truck is about 4 years old and is swirled up pretty badly. The company is about to replace it with a new model so I figured what the heck.

First I washed and clayed the hood
-1st step: M105 w/ W5000 at 1500RPM. I applied moderate pressure and went over the panel 3 times. I then used the weight of the machine for 1 pass. I then lowered the speed to 2 then 1. The panel was very hot so I decided to lower the number of passes on the next section.
-2nd step: M205 w/ W8000 at 1500RPM. Again I applied moderate pressure but this time only 1 pass. I did another pass using the weight of the machine. I lowered the speed to 2 then 1, w/ one pass on each speed.
-3rd step: M205 w/ W9000 at speed 2. I applied some pressure with one pass. I completed another pass at speed 1.

I am pretty happy with the result and I am going to continue to practice. I noticed after using the M105 and the W5000 there were still noticeable swirls. It wasn't until the M205 came into the mix I noticed almost zero swirls. Could it be possible the polish is hiding the swirls? I would appreciate some feed back. Here are a few before and after pics

AWESOME correction, JSIN151. Not many people could effect that result using a rotary on their first outing! Kudos! :

Thanks for the compliments. I had this idea I was going to burn through the clear and make a mess of things. I look forward to doing a complete vehicle.

I found rotary to be a piece of cake after using the G100 polisher. I just kept the speed slow and used gentle products until I got a feel for the machine. M105 and M205 are almost hard to screw up if you have any assemblance of technique.

Rock on! Looks great! Now try black!

You triple dog dare me? After a bit more practice I plan on correcting the paint on my friends black G6.

People are too afraid of a rotary, its really not as hard as some people make it out to be, you just need to pay attention.

Keep in mind that M105 and the W5000 are two of our most aggressive products so there can be some swirls left after using this combination although on some paints I've seen it finish out swirl free.

Technique is a huge factor in end-results for any single step so keep practicing. You're results look great so far!
