  • Backing plate question

A while back I purchased the w64 backing plate. I am about to purchase a Makita and wanted to make sure the backing plate I have is the one I need. I have searched the forums and it looks like I would need the w65 or w68 for the 8in wool pad but the w64 will work well with the 6.5 in pads. The question I have is will the w64 backing plate work well with the 2.0 7in pads or will i need to upgrade the plate in order to achieve near perfect results. Thank in advance.

    Re: Backing plate question

Ditch all of them and get the Solo backing plate. You will never have any worries again

The W64 will work for your needs, but it is small for the 8" wool pads. If you haven't purchased the wool yet, just buy the Solo wool, they are a bit smaller, and work well with the W64(although the Solo backing plate works soooooo much better!

      Re: Backing plate question

Interesting, I never considered the solo backing plate. I have not yet purchased the wool. To be honest I have not paid much attention to the solo system. How much better results would I be able to achieve with the w64 vs the w66 solo plate. My goal ultimately is to achieve near perfect results. Thanks again.

The W66 Solo plate is very nice. It has quite a bit of cushion and helps to smooth things out.

I just got the W68 plates. They are a bit firmer than the W66, but I haven't worked with them enough to make a decision. So far, I like them a bit more than the W66.

The W64 plate is undersized for use with a wool pad. But, I like the perfect centering with the centering button. Also, the smaller plate helps the pad conform to curves.

          Re: Backing plate question

I may just stick with the w64 and purchase the two wool pads from the solo system. One question, is the light cutting pad from the solo system equal to or better than 7207 pad?

Do you mean the WWLC7 Solo Wool Light Cutting pad?

The Solo Light cutting pad is more aggressive than the W7207 cutting pad.

Order of Aggressiveness - Cutting Pads

The question comes up once in a while as to which pad is the most or least aggressive when it comes to cutting pads. Here's a picture to show our cutting pads from least to most aggressive...

Remember, how aggressive your process is will be determined not only by your choice of product but also your choice of buffing pad as well as the tool you use and your technique.

                Mike,
Thanks for the info. I remember seeing that diagram a while ago but I was not able to find it.

                  Re: Backing plate question

Solo backing plate and the 3M UK plate are both great. The 3M plate is big bucks though.
