  • Practice, practice...NICE!

    Thought I'd practice with my rotary today, try out a few new Meg's products, use up some old OPT and get ready for my first black vehicle full detail; a '06 Jeep Commander (not small) and boy does it have swirls! So I used my '85 S10 Blazer that's under construction for drags later this year as a guinea pig. She didn't squeal too much!

    Don't have the backordered M105, M205 combo yet so I started with some OPT compound I've had for awhile and a wool pad from Eastwood, then to OPT polish on green foam, then OPT Dark Magic on white foam and the same on blue foam. Did a small section the M83 DACP I got last week. I like both, but have to admit the M83 seemed a little better than OPT polish blue foam pad. Dark Magic seems like pretty good stuff, but I'm confused by the local dealer that said it does not have wax in it, yet the label says it does??? I don't think the young kid knew much about it, to be honest, but I don't trust the label now either. Plan to switch to all Meguiar's once this stuff's gone anyway.

    I topped both sections off with M21 sealant I got last week too and then Gold paste wax. NICE!
    The before does not do justice to just how bad it was, even under Zenon and Halogen. I forgot to take a straight on Halogen photo.

    Enjoy and feel free to comment as always.

    Zenon before correction:

    Halogen of corrected door and uncorrected, but wiped with detail spray quarter panel;

    The money shot! Halogens, corrected panel, polished, sealed, waxed passenger door. I love it. Haven't got the slicks mounted yet or I would roll it out in the sun. Hopefully tomorrow so I can get the Jeep inside Thursday. This shot made me understand why this paint is called Inferno Red Pearl. Plan to wet sand the entire vehicle to get rid of the orange peel once it's running. That WILL be NICE! But even with the peel, does this look wet, or what! Can you tell I'm having fun?

    That does look like wet-paint...

    Maybe you better hang a sign?

        Re: Practice, practice...NICE!

        Thanks!!!!! I feel pretty darn good about it. That said, I'm still a little worried about doing this black Jeep Thursday. It has terrible swirls and having gone back out in the garage and looking at my arsenal I realize I don't have enough stuff. It seems my products lack in the finishing area. Also don't have enough orand and white DA foam pads. I'm thinking I should go and get some fine cut polish or SwirlX to be on the safe side in case I get marring and can't get it out with what I've got. Unfortunately, to get a heck of a deal I ordered half a dozen M105 and M205 from a source that's backordered until mid April. My bad. I'll be in like Flynn when it arrives, though!

        Any ideas? Anyone have experience with black Jeep paint? (like I really think no one here has ever done one) Is it hard, soft, cooperative, etc. As I said this is my first black vehicle and any tips on how, what and why would ease my aprehension. I have read a lot of posts here about swirls, marring and the advice to get rid of them.

        I think a SwirlX purchase is in my very near future!

              Thanks again guys!

              The black Jeep will be here first thing in the morning so I guess I'll find out how different the factory paint is compared to this after-market paint job on my S10. I'm sure it will be different, how much I don't know yet. I would think it's going to be much more resistant to polishing? I can't get any direct sun before shots since I have to start so early, but I will take some in the garage with halogens and zenon, during correction and after.

              To be contiuned...

                    More in progress photos. This thing was trashed! Had to call the owner and she agreed to let me have it another day. Since she's a friend I am going and extra MILE and then some. I would have never finished it unless I cut some major shortcuts and just cleaner/wax and wax to fill. As it is I still won't have time to get all swirls and scratches out, but she's not paying for that either. I was afraid to sand this bad scratch any further (2000 grit). It's about 90% gone, though. Looks pretty good so far.
