  • Pawn shops are great

So I'm walking out the local sporting goods store after picking up some Steelhead treats, when out of the corner of my eye, I glimpse a new sign 'PAWN SHOP'. I've been a long time browser of pawn shops. They seem to have a little bit of everything and if I'm looking for something obscure or don't want to pay full price for something I may not use more than once. They always seem to have what I want. This place has been around for awhile, but had just put up a big new sign (good indicator of heavy traffic). So off I go to browse.

Wandering down the tool aisles I spot a Makita 9227 in good condition, with a backing plate and wool pad attached. I look at the tag and it lists the tool, bail handle and case for $125. Not impressed, but interested. I leave and run some other errands, but passing the shop on my way home I decide to stop back in and see if I can talk him down on the Makita.

Well, to make a long story short. I walked out of there with a lightly used Makita 9227, 8" backing pad, new wool pad, bail handle and bag for $80!

    WooHoo!

Now I get to see what shine is really about. I have several Megs products for the rotary already, the 8" plate and a few pads, a 3" plate and pads. So for the questions:

What backing plate do you prefer for the Megs 6" pads?

What are your favorite products to use with the rotary?

I'm thinking about getting the Dynabrade RO head for rotaries as well, any input on it would be great.

    Thanks,

    Brock

Pawn shops also cater to criminals who steal things and bring them in for cheap cash. I imagine the $99 CD player that was stolen out of my car when the thief broke my $250 window was sold to the pawn shop for $15 that went to buy a few hits of crack. I would guess 95% or more of pawn shops know or heavily suspect alot of the goods they buy off people to resell are stolen. I have moved since and IMO I would rather not have pawn shops close to where I live and thank goodness that is the case now. No offense to people who go in there looking for a good deal but keep in mind you are possibly buying stolen goods and helping to keep the pawn shop open.

I understand were your coming from. Down here in the Tampa Fl. area it seems 2 weeks can not pass and there is a story about how more and more people in today's economy are pawning items just to get to and from work. Some of the items being pawned are unbelievable. From family heirlooms to tools. They interview a lot of the people pawning these various items. You can not help but feel bad for them. So there is no disputing what you stated. But not all pawn shops are like that.

I have a friend that owns a pawn shop and he will not accept items without a drivers ID and the police come in about twice a week to check out stock. The stories he tells of kids bringing in their parents stuff is unreal or the ones that are repeat customers with gambling problems etc.He turns away anything fishy and alerts local police. He guesses that 10% or less is hot but other areas may be higher.

I feel your pain, being robbed *****, but anyone who purchases stolen goods is a fence, not a pawn shop. The law maybe a little more occupied with other concerns in Texas, but in my neck of the woods the local PD make daily visits with shop owners and work in close cooperation with them to identify possible criminal activity. In this area, if you are thief and attempt to pawn a stolen item, you will be going to jail.
That said, this guy has been in business in the same location (only one for a few miles and only 8 total in the whole county) for over 30 years. Everyone who pawns an item is required to provide a copy of a valid drivers license. He has helped a lot of people when no one else would. That's not to say he isn't in business to make a profit, but he goes out of his way to hold a pawn ticket as long as people stay in touch with him. I give him my business when ever I can, to help keep him in business.

So, what pads and products do you like to use with your rotary?

Here in Mobile AL, pawn shops are required to give us a list of items weekly and hold them until we check the items against lists of items reported stolen on police reports. I send many people to jail that have pawned an item reported stolen years ago. The item goes back to the original owner after the arrest.

Same rules apply here in Virginia.

For a backing plate, Id suggest the solo w66 plate. Its nice to have the extra cushion of the foam. Also, I'd suggest the solo pads. They work great.
If its fast, loud, and runs on a flammable liquid...count me in.

Thank you, thank you very much! I was beginning to think I'd posted in a political forum where no one answers any questions, they just comment on extraneous text.

Do you have any experience with the rotary? Are you going to get a test hood or something to test on before you go to town on your own car?

I've been using the inside of the bed and tailgate of my work truck thus far. I'm looking around for a couple of hoods to practice on, but so far the junk yards around here are acting like they're Gold ($125 for an 80's Chevy truck hood).

I've only tried M80 with an 8" wool pad and an 8" finish pad (W9000). So far, so good, No haze, swirls or burns. Been working at around '3'. I've removed some pretty deep scratches and the tailgate is now the shiniest part on the truck.

Today, I plan to step it up a notch with some wool and #84 at a little higher speed. I'm going to try to intentionally instill some swirls, then remove them. Maybe even try to burn the clear. I'm not worried about the paint, it's a work truck with a canopy and next month the bed is getting a coat of Line-X.

I also have a Case track dozer to play with, haven't checked yet but I'm confident it's a single stage. And the Bronco, which I know is single stage. I've been slacking on it's restoration. Once I got it clean and a little shine on it with the PC it was time to go play with it. It spent it's summer scraping through 4X4 Goat trails, crossing rivers and romping in mud bogs. It gets a new paint job next summer, so I'll have all winter to polish paint on it.

It maybe too soon to say so, but the rotary sure seems like a lot less work for better results.

Now I'm just trying to get an order together for a couple dozen pads and some different size and style backing plates. That was the intent of this thread, looking for ideas of what others like to use. Before it side tracked into a Pawn Shop thread.

Have you been using a rotary? and how's the eye doing?

I agree, I think once you get the initial worry of messing up over with, it isn't all that bad.

I have started to use a rotary more and more and really like it.

Eye is doing pretty good, a little blurry still but glasses should fix that.

I would suggest getting some M105 and a polishing pad for the rotary, can't go wrong there.
