  • Meguairs Backing plate problem

I recently bought a rotary with M16 spindle shaft c/w 7" backing plate.I need a smaller BP for my W8006 pad so, I get a Meguairs 5.5" W64 backing plate with 5/8" thread. But, I cant fit the Maguairs BP onto the M16 shaft, I suspect the thread is smaller. Is M16 and 5/8" the same or different ? What can I co to make the BP fit onto my M16 thread ? Please help..

Might not be able to make it work at all, might look into a heli-coil which is a thread replacement for worn threads. Take your backing plate and your rotary buffer to an automotive parts store or machine shop and show them what you're trying to do and see if there is a heli-coil that will mate the two together.

Might just have to either get a different rotary buffer if this is going to be a long term issue/problem.

Thanks Mike for you reply. I think I have to bring it to machine shop for them to see what can they do about it.

        Hi,

I'd similar problem like you do too. The problem was the one (makita 9227C asian version) that i have is using M16 Spindle. The problem is even worse since it's hard to get specialized backing plate for detailing in my country esp. in the province where i live. Till date i haven't seen any thread adaptor that 100% perfect for 5/8 - 11 spindle. Despite tryin to machine shop for a thread adapter, I trimmed my original makita backing plate to fit my soft buff 2.0 pads, and it works fine. Someday, when i'm in the need for 3" backing plate, i might buy a new one and trim it to 3" backing plate.

I got a Mikita 9227 and a 7" backing plate, I had to look around a ton to find pads specific to fitting the 7" Plate, I also considered changing out to a different backing plate all together.
