  • Rotary Lessons ?

Where can I find a place to get some lessons/training on using the roatry ? I live in Houston TX, I'm sure there has to be some place around that teaches this skill.

I have tried searching the 'net without any luck. I know there are videos out there, but a video isn't as good as hands-on instruction !

    Thanks for any help.

Finding a detailer to show you how is kind of a hit or miss option but often times one of the few options you have. The problem is if you ask someone that is doing everything wrong, or most things wrong and he teaches you his methods, you've just learned bad techniques.

The bigger problem is the guy in most body shops and detail shops are doing shoddy work, a lot of time it's not their fault, it's because they are given crummy tools, (wool pads and abrasive compounds), and no training.

That makes it hard for guys like you to find someone that truly knows what they are doing to learn from.

It's probably worth a try however...

        Well -

If you guys from meguiars would pack up your stuff and come to houston that would insure i got the right training and information !-

I'm going to poke around a little more and see what I can find.

In the mean time I am going to play with the DA my wife bought me a month ago. Her car came out great using the G100 #9 and M21. My black truck has a lot of fine car wash scratches that I'm hoping I can remove with #80 or #83 and the G100. If they don't then I wanted to step up to the rotary.

There is nothing better than a freshly polished black vehicle!!

Maybe you should pack your things and go down to Cali when Meguiar's is having a class teaching techniques with a rotary? Either one would insure you got the proper knowledge. I just think the option I listed is more likely to happen.

In those detailing classes that Meguiars hosts, do they cover how to use a rotary? All the pictures I have ever seen just shows the DA. Maybe because the DA is so easy and the rotary isnt something that you can teach in a day. Mike could probably do it though.

There's nothing better than hands on rotary training with Mike! Come fly out to CA someday...I'm sure he could teach you some pointers! He taught me some fundamentals, and now my rotary skills make panels look

If you don't have access to trained professionals like Mike, I'd recommend buying the Meguiar's Professional Video to learn some rotary basics. This will help you visualize how a rotary buffer is correctly used. Then, just practice the rotary on a panel that's not too important for you (i.e a hood from a junkyard). Goodluck!

Most of the Saturday classes do cover hands and DA primarily. The rotary would just come up in questions, products, etc, but not hands-on.

The Wednesday night open nights have a little time for rotary practice sometimes.

But you can get 90% or of things with a DA and #83, so definately give it a good shot first. Even 3 - 5 passes if it is really stubborn. Dont have to just give it one pass with the #83 and give up hope.
