  • Meguiar's rotary backing plate

    Hello all,

got my Meguiar's rotary 8" backing plate a couple of weeks ago, and there is this protruding piece of black plastic in the middle of the plate on the velcro side. What is this? Should I leave it there and work with it, or remove it? I received my rotary 6.5" backing plate a few days ago and it too has the same thing... Please let me know if I should remove it or leave it, and the best way to remove it if I need to. Thanks much!

It’s the centering “nub”. I fits in the hole in the Velcro “loop” on the back of the buffing pads.

You want your pad well centered when rotary buffing.

......... and if you ever have to use a non-Meguiars pad on the Meguiars backing you can screw the centering "nub" it off.

Thanks guys, I will leave it on...

I am also getting more vibration in the 6.5" pads than the 8" pads, and the pads are not new... Do you guys know what is causing this or if this is normal? Thanks.

Were they always out of balance, or is this new?

If you chip a piece of the foam off, it's amazing how bad they'll wobble.

Lay your rotary face up on a bench. Now spin the pad by hand. Does it turn in a perfect circle or do you notice an eliptical motion or any "bumps" in the outer edge when you spin it?

If you don't notice anything while doing this by hand, carefully turn the machine on and look for the same issue.

I will try and take a look...

I've only received this rotary (Makita) a few weeks ago and it was fine using the 8" pads with it. I just felt more vibration (kinda like when my PC's counterweight is taken off) when after I got the Meguiar's backing plate for use with the 6.5" pads. Thanks.

I have a few W8006 pads where the velcro backing isnt exactly centered, and if I were to use the centering stub, this would cause it to create a round indent on the velcro, instead of fitting perfectly around the foam ring at the centre of the pad
