What should I expect the finish to be like after #84/W7006?

The rotary is still new to me, but I've got a beater to practice on (Dark Blue Mercedes) so have been having a play with some #84 and a cutting pad.

What should the finish be like after I've just used the #84? What I'm seeing is all the swirls removed, but quite a bit of holograming where I've polished. A pass with PC/#83?W8006 removes all of it and gets me to a 95% finish, but as I'm so new to the rotary I don't really know what to expect.

I guess what I'm asking is - "should I be able to get a decent enough finish with #84/W7006 that only mild polishing (say #82) is required thereafter, or are a few holograms the norm?"

Any advice appreciated.

Hey Ben,

The #84 may leave a slightly hazed finish especially on dark colors. You will need to follow the #84 will a less aggressive product, in this case, #83 and a W-8006 Polishing Pad. The #83 will remove the haze and possible holograms left from the more aggressive product. With that said, on a light color, you may be able to go straight to the LSP after #83. But on dark colors, you may need one more step, in that case either #82 or #80 with the rotary or #80 with the PC.

I often use the following:

#84/W-7006, rotary
#83/W-8006, rotary
#82/W-8006 or W-9006 (depending on the paint's softness), PC/rotary
or
#80/W-8006, PC

Being bit of a perfectionist I think I was convincing myself that the #84 would break down to an almost perfect finish and that I must have been doing something wrong. My rotary skills still need a lot of work, but at least I now know what to expect and to live with it, rather than continually beating myself up over it!

What you are feeling is the same as most people new to the rotary. The rotary is just a tool in the process in obtaining a flawless finish. After some practice, you will LOVE the rotary!!!

If I may add one more comment...M84 does down nicely and much smoother than many compound/paint cleaners on the market. As Tim said, it will need something else to refine the finish it leaves.

The benefit of it leaving a comparatively nicer finish than other compounds is that removing the marks it leaves will be easier. Achieving that truly swirl free finish is so tough with the grittier compounds or a scoured finish.
