  • Meg Pad Cleaning

    Hi MOL Members

    i recently order my g100 and some pads(polishing,finishing) and #80, 83,
what i have so far is
    scratch x, color x,#7,#16,Nxt Paste wax,dc1,dc2,dc3...
my ? is ....How do you all clean your Pads
    1. your yellow polishing pad
    2. your finishing pad
    3.Mf bonnett

i do understand Megs Does not recommend washing your pads but since i heard they have updated there adhesive couldnt you now...has anyone have recent problems

here is a thought i was thinking of using J&J Baby Shampoo to clean the pads and some water by hand ...

another method was using for example snappy clean or some citrus type of cleaner and clean the pad by hand...i heard dawn or some other brands might be to strong....any input?

also another was apc diluted then clean with spray water then either use the pc and spin it to air dry or use a rotary ..

who does the method that Megs recommends on pads cleaning..reason i ask i cant afford to lose one pad also if you use a terry towel to wring out the product not all of it will come out and if you use a bristle brush after it dry and before using it will that be enough over and over the life of that pad and will that affect or harm the paint or pad in anyway or have less result then compared to when it was new or cleaned...

another ? is i know your not suppose to mix wax/polish/cleaners but if you clean the pad can you or do you suggest not to reason is i have a more products then pads.....

and final ? do you guys use finishing pads..i heard mike suggest nxt paste wax to be used with a polishing pad....correct me if i am wrong but maybe i should only get polishing pads and use them for everything from cleaners/polish/waxes

    thanks Guys

    Everyone have a great weekend
    Miguel

For the polishing pads and finishing pads it depends on which product is on them. So far, I have used #s 3, 5, 7, 9, 80, & 82 out of the polishes. For polishes I find plain water works just fine. I flip them over and hit them full force with the garden hose. I place them on top of a grit guard while doing this.

For the pads I have used wax or sealant on, this does not work, After having cleaned one of them out with Dawn and having the Velcro come off I decided to stick to Meg's advice and not wash them out. However I have hosed them off just like the ones that have polish in them once I have used them a few times and they look a little blackend from hitting rubber or oxidized black plastic. This does nothing for getting the product out though. Just removes some of the grime. I have also done this when my buddy sent my DA flying off a 3 step ladder.

For both, I then put them on the rotary for a whirl for drying. I tried this on the DA set at 6 but the vibration was so much that one of the pads developed a slight tear where the velcro was glued. So I only dry with the rotary now. It gets them dry enough that I can store them in an 8"x8" ziplock bag with the seal open. To date, I have noticed no mold/mildew issues. BTW, I saved the box the DA came in and it is just the right size for storing 10-12 ziplocks with pads in them. All the bags are open. The lid on the box is set up just right.

I do have a pad for every product and have a case of each pad sitting in the wings. I have used a couple of different polishes on the same pad awith no problems. But at least have a pad for Polishes. Maybe another for Glazes, cleaners and so on. Also concerning the Waxes have one for wax and one for sealant . Maybe even another for Cleaner waxes. Just my thought here but if budget was my concern, this is the route I would probably go until someone educated me otherwise.

As far as using a Polishing pad to apply wax. It can be applied by either one but as a newbie I am sticking to the 9006 until I have reason to try the 8006. I am sure there is some benefit to using the 8006 but I am sure there is benefit to using the 9006 as well. I can;t say I can remeber off the top of my head if I have seen any threads that lay out what those benefits might be though. I'd love to have them pointed out again here if anyone knows.

That's all I can think of to offer to you on the subject. I know alot of people do it different ways for different reasons. This is my story and I am sticking to it.
