  • Used my new G100 and the backing plate fell apart

I was using my new G100 with the Meguiar's polishing kit.
Velcor backing plate with foam pads and bonnets.

I was applying polish and wax around 2-1/2 and buffing the wax at 4~4-1/2

The backing plate came apart in two pieces when I pulled the foam applicator off.

This backing plate was rather expensive. Is this a common problem with this product?

Should I be using another brand backing plate?

        hombrewdude,

Keep us posted. I just ordered the WDAV99 D.A. Velcro Buffing System today from the Megs site (E-Store) and would like to know if there is a flaw and how do you know you have the flaw. Well, short of the backing plate falling off I guess is one indicator. LOL. Good luck and I am sure Megs will take care of you. They are a A1 Company to deal with all around.

          What he said!

I've used mine for years with no problems at all. Yours, being brand new, must have a manufacturing defect. Call Meguiar's Customer Care TOLL FREE at 1.800.347.5700. They'll make it right.

I've had three of the W-64DA's do that to me. I no longer use Meg's backing plates on the DA. I have a G100 (not a PC-branded variant) with a 3M hook-it plate, and use the W-7006, 8006, and 9006 pads with it.

            3M part number is: #05775

I've had great luck with the W-64 on my rotary, though.

Mine is 6 years old (and still going strong), but I think they're made a little different now-a-days than they used to be.

At least they look different to me.

I used mine last weekend for the first time and had no problems thus far. I am wondering though, if your polishing with the pad flat against the surface opposed to using it continuosly tilted on one side. The pad should always be flat to the vehicles surface (as much as possible) and I wonder what effect with stresses would there be on the backing plate if it was primarily used tilted. Just a thought and I hope you have this issue resolved.

I don't notice an issue so much with that as I do from when I started using the G100 at speeds 5-6 the problem I had got worse.... maybe the W-64DA isn't designed/built to handle that high of a speed on the G100?

Hmmmmm, interesting. Perhaps you have a point when there are issues with the plate and higher settings being used. The highest I went was setting 5. But that is because that is the highest recommended setting I have seen on here for product applications. Maybe Max setting 5 is recommended for more then just the product that is being applied (like the plates top speed?). No matter, I trust the people on here and therefore, I will not exceed it (for now )
