  • Done right the first time...

    I have a 1995 Ford Explorer. It is in extremely good condition for being 10 years old. There are a few mild scratches on that back gate and some swirl marks throughout the entire body but nothing too major. The hood of the Explorer is the worst. There are small like knicks and scratches right on the front of the hood ( the side where it is exposed to oncoming debris while driving). I'd really like to get rid of majority of those marks and really give my car a new look again. I've decided that I'm going to pick up the G-100 and a few products. Here is my list of things to get. If you guys can help me out, I'd like your input on anything else I should get or change....

    Meguiars G-100
    Speed Glaze M-8032
    W8006
    W9006 x2
    NXT liquid wax

    I've always used Meguairs Gold Class Liquid Wax and applied it by hand, but lately I've been seeing a lot more people using NXT, is it any better or is it a personal preference?

    Can you guys think of anything else I would need? If you'd like pictures of what your dealing with, I can post them as well.

    Does anyone have any other suggestions on what to use or any input on the products I've used.

      Hi kbkid!.......Welcome to the forum.

      I like your list, but if I were you, I would order a few more W-8006 pads. Meguiars sells a kit of them at a good price. Might be best if you would order 2 of these kits instead of buying the pads individually, as you will need plenty of pads down the road.

      Set of 3 pads - WDAV99-B

      $24.95

      I would also include #83 Dual Action Cleaner Polish to go along with your Speed Glaze. You can find #83 in the quart size bottle too.

      Post back if you need more answers.

        I'd really like to eliminate all of the small knicks on my hood. What would be the best sequence to go with? Which should I start with? Which is a better choice of wax; NXT or Gold Class?

        Should I pick up any bonnets or anything else? I have many many MF towels.

          You could try #80 for starters with the W-8006 pad and see if that removes them. If not, then you will have to step up to the #83/W-8006 pad combo.

          But it all depends on how deep your scratches are too. If they are too deep, or if the primer is showing, then all you can do is make the scratches less noticeable.

          Here is a link to some info that might be of help to you...

          Which is a better choice of wax; NXT or Gold Class?

          I can't honestly say, since I've never used GC wax, but I know that it has been reformulated for more durability. The best thing for you to do is to try a side by side comparison test on the hood of your vehicle, and see which looks best to you, and lasts the longest.

          But I will say that NXT is tough to beat!

          Should I pick up any bonnets or anything else? I have many many MF towels.

          I've never used the microfiber bonnets yet, but many people swear by them. If you have the money, then go for it. But you will need a W-7006 pad to use with them.

          I would also recommend that you buy some plush 100% cotton terry towels too. Products like #83, & #80 can fill up a microfiber pretty fast.

          Maybe some of the others will pitch-in and give you a few more ordering ideas too.

              Hi there,

              I have read that it's a good idea to use a polishing bonnet over a W7006 pad.............also the W7006 pad should only be used for this application and not be used directly on the paint as it's VERY abrasive.

                I find that bonnets on the W8006 pad work pretty well for removing wax. Sure, the W7006 works better, and I highly recommend it. But it's not absolutely necessary.

                The WDAV99-B set is a killer deal. I find I use a lot more polishing pads than finishing pads so the two W8006 to one W9006 setup is about right for me.

                Gold Class is a darn good wax. I wouldn't feel compelled to dump it and switch to NXT. I'd just use it up and switch when it's gone (or, just keep using it). You could always use the $14.95 for more bonnets or whatever.

                I would highly recommend getting some ScratchX. I find I do "spot" buffing by hand a lot more than I pull out the G-100. It's just too darn easy to grab the tube and do a couple square inches of surface if you get some little scuff or bird bomb etching or something.

                  I agree with RB... I have #80 and it works very well. Meguiars always says to start with the least aggressive. I have not used the Gold Class Wax either but I have heard allot of good comments on MOL. I really like NXT and wouldn't trade it for anything on black!

                  You can never have enough buffing pads for the PC! I have around 10 but if money is an issue start with what you need now then get some more on your next order.

                  As for bonnets I would pick some up... I have never use the "Microfiber Bonnets" but I have 4-5 "Ultimate Bonnets" (both do the same thing just different materials). The bonnets make removing wax fast and simple, IMO they will add a little more to the depth of NXT Wax.

                  Like the other pc said.... I have found the W8006 works well as a backing pad for the bonnets maybe not the best but it works.

                  Once you start with the PC you will want to try some other products with it. So as you get use to it and want to improve your paint even more add more products to your collection.

                  If you have never used Clay it is another great product to help remove bonded contaminates from your paint. Quik Clay System

                  By the way... Welcome and Good luck! Let us know what you do.

                    So what are the basics to just start off with. I don't think I really need 101 pads and bonnets right yet. So what do you guys think would be the best for a beginner?

                    I already have a Meguiars Clay Bar and ScratchX.

                    What are necessities for a beginner?

                      We could suggest 100's product combos. I know it can get a little confusing listening to all the suggestions but you really can't go wrong with any Meguiars products, so....

                      I think what you listed in your first post is a good start:

                      Meguiars G-100
                      W8006
                      W9006 x2

                      Speed Glaze M-8032 - Very good product cleans and polishes up very nice work it in with your PC in a 2 X 2 area then remove - do not let dry!

                      NXT liquid wax - Another very good product simple to use, removes with ease - apply a thin coat let sit for 15 min then remove. For some extra depth add a second coat 12 - 24 hours after the first.

                      See where that gets you... then in a few months you may want to add some other products to your collection say a pure polish like #81, more towels, more PC pads and so on.

                        If you buy the pads separately, they will cost you more. But if you have your heart set on the 3 you first listed, then go for it.

                        Edit: On second thought, I would suggest that you buy 1 pad kit, and then buy the second finishing pad. It will probably cost you about the same, dollar wise.....Well, just a wee bit more.

                        1 W-8006 @ $10.95
                        2 W-9006 @ $21.90
                        --------
                        = $32.85
                        ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
                        1 WDAV99B @ 24.95
                        1 W-9006 @ 10.95
                        --------
                        = $35.90
                          Which pads do you guys use the most? If I'm very rarly going to be using the 9006, then I probably would be fine with just one. Also, I could start off with just the #80 Speed Glaze and if needed pick up some #83.
                          We'll see where that gets me. I'm still up for any more suggestions.
                            Figure one pad per product plus one clean, dry pad for removing wax with bonnets.
                            If you're using #80, #83 and one wax that would be two W8006 pads and one W9006 pad plus one for bonnets, which might as well be a W7006. If you want the option of using that extra pad as a back up for polishing make it a W8006.
                            I like to have a spare or two in case I drop (or launch ) one but it's not absolutely necessary.
                            One two-pack of X4003 bonnets is enough to start.
                              I don't think I'm going to remove wax and polish with my G-100. I feel like I do a better job when I use just a Microfiber towel or a terry cloth towel.
                              So I'll get:
                              Meguiars G-100
                              #80 Speed Glaze
                              #83 Polish
                              A pack of two 8006 and one 9006
                              For those pack of 3 pads, do I need to pick up any more backing plates?
