OK. I ordered one of these bad boys along with the Instructional Video, 3 cutting pads, 3 polishing pads, and 6 GC MF Bonnets. I have been reading through this forum, but I want to confirm some things that I have read and have some questions.

    1. To remove wax with the GC Bonnet, I put it over a cutting pad?
    2. Can I use the GC Bonnet to remove other products, besides waxes?
    3. Any products that have abrasives in them should be applied with a cutting pad?

Now, I have two product suggestion questions.

    4. I have recently clayed, cleaned (ColorX), and waxed (Cleaner Wax followed by Gold Class) my SS paint 86 F150. It looks pretty good for a truck that was never washed, let alone any other upkeep on the paint. So, to remove the rest of the hazyness in the paint and make it look wetter, what should I use?

    5. I just fixed my 87 Maxima (SS paint, I will double check on that one). It has never been cleaned, ever I think. The hood, roof, and trunk lid look like dried out plastic. Should I just go straight to some Diamond Cut Compound?

Can get pics of either if needed to help clarify condition of paint.

    Thanks ALOT in Advance.

Yes, I do not have a cutting pad so I use a polishing pad but it tends to roll the edges up. Many say the cutting pad is best used with the Bonnets. On my next order I plan on getting a cutting pad.

    2. Can I use the GC Bonnet to remove other products, besides waxes?
You can use it to remove other products but, keep in mind when using cleaners or polishes you do not want to let them dry like a wax. So.... you will have to remove your application pad and install your cutting pad with the bonnet every time you have applied product in your 2x2 area. IMO its easier just to apply cleaners and polishes with the PC and remove by hand.

    3. Any products that have abrasives in them should be applied with a cutting pad?
Meguiars recommends to not use the cutting pad with the PC. Many have had good results with it on their PC (maybe some of them will read this), I prefer the polishing pad with cleaners and polishes. Here is a good post that gives you pads selections and speed settings: http://www.meguiarsonline.com/forums...&threadid=2524

Others will have to chime in on the last two I have not worked with Single Stage paint much.

Because the cutting pad is only recommended for and used for removing dried wax, you really only need one of them. It would be better if you had this combination,

1 W-7006 Foam Cutting Pad for removing wax with a bonnet
2 W-8006 Foam Polishing Pads for applying cleaner/polishes
1-2 W-9006 Foam Finishing Pads for applying waxes

      1. To remove wax with the GC Bonnet, I put it over a cutting pad?
      Yes.

      2. Can I use the GC Bonnet to remove other products, besides waxes?
You can, but normal procedure is to remove other products by hand. Removing a thin coat of dried wax is different from removing paint cleaners, cleaner/polishes and pure polishes. First of all waxes are supposed to be fully dry before removing them while paint cleaners, cleaner/polishes and pure polishes are supposed to be removed after applying which means they usually are not fully dried as it's not important for these types of products to dry. Removing these types of products will tend to fill up the bonnet with excess residue faster than removing a thin coat of wax and will tend to make your bonnet wet. Once your bonnet becomes wet it will not be as effective as a dry bonnet and once your bonnet becomes wet it will then make your foam pad become wet and then if you switch bonnets to a new bonnet the foam pad will make your new bonnet become wet. I could go on and continue to add factors that will build a case for not using a bonnet on a machine to remove products besides car wax from your car's finish but I think you get the idea. The answer is "Yes", in that it's physically possible to use a bonnet to remove products besides car wax it just isn't usually the best method for most instances. What is just as effective is to remove non-wax products, (Compounds, Paint Cleaners, Cleaner/Polishes & Pure Polishes), by hand using either a premium quality microfiber polishing cloth or a clean, soft 100% cotton terry cloth towel.

      3. Any products that have abrasives in them should be applied with a cutting pad?
No. (Where did you get this? some other forum?).

When working with the G100 dual action polisher, Meguiar's NEVER recommends using our foam cutting pad for applying any products to the finish as the foam used for this pad is to aggressive and will tend to dull and mar the finish.

For applying Cleaner/Polishes and Cleaner/Waxes, Meguiar's only recommends using our W-8006 foam polishing pad. On this note we don't recommend using any of our compounds with the dual action polisher, this would be M84 and M85. We also don't recommend using these paint cleaners, M01 Medium Cut Cleaner and M04 Heavy Cut Cleaner. You can use the M02 Fine Cut Cleaner as long as it's the new formulation and states that it can be used with a dual action polisher on the back of the label.

So, to remove the rest of the haziness in the paint and make it look wetter, what should I use?
Now that you have a dual action polisher, add some M80 Speed Glaze to your detailing tool chest and re-polish the truck using this product with a W-8006 foam polishing pad on the 4.5 to 5.0 setting of your G100. Follow this with wax.

      5. I just fixed my 87 Maxima (SS paint, I will double check on that one). It has never been cleaned, ever I think. The hood, roof, and trunk lid look like dried out plastic. Should I just go straight to some Diamond Cut Compound?
See my statements above in that we never recommend using our compounds with the dual action polisher. If M80 or M83 will not tackle the problem then either it cannot be fixed or it will require the use of a rotary buffer.

Thanks gb387 and Mike for the replies.

        Mike-
I will try to exchange 2 cutting pads and get 2 finishing pads.

Question #2- Gotcha (Thx gb387 too)

Question #3, I got told that by the PBE store that I posted about in the Customer Service Hot Line Forum.

        Question #4- #80 it is.

Question #5- I will go get some #83 (need to get some anyways for another project) and give it a shot. If it works, I will definately post some pics up.

Not entirely sure what your question is... the link goes to the microfiber bonnets that would be used for removing products.

You would put those over a clean pad to use them.

just making sure it was the bonnet that goes over the pad, cuz i thought the pads were 6.5", and i just wanted to make sure the 6"-7" would fit because it says "6”-7” orbital buffers"

I am with Rousch as I too have just purchased the G-100. My question being:

I feel that my paint is in pretty good shape, however there are areas with the swirls, light scratches etc... Would I need to start with the 83 on just those areas that have the most scratches swirls, or would it hurt to do the whole car?

I would then hit it with the 80 Speed Glaze and finish up with a coat of wax?

So basically, to summarize, the process would be:

                Wash
Clay (if need be, I just clayed my car about a mobth ago)
                #83
                #80
                NXT Wax

Should that just about do it? I am pretty pumped about getting the G-100. I just want to take the best steps to get that finish that everyone raves about with the G-100

                Thanks,
                Scott

It is always best to start as mild as possible, unless you are experienced enough to know what to start with.

#80 can remove mild swirls, so starting with that should be best. Just start with 1 panel, and see if it fixes everything. If not, then move to #83.

You can just do the problem areas with #83 if you want, nothing wrong with that. Then go over everything with #80. or do everything with #83, then #80, if the swirls are going to be stubborn. Wont damage anything either way.

You can always add a pure polish like #7 or #81 before the wax, which might look fantastic on a black corvette....

                    Dumb question:

The pads I would use then are:

                    #83 = 8006
                    #80 = 8006
                    #07 = 8006
                    NXT = 9006

Forgive me if I got this wrong, of that cleaning/polishing/waxing combination, would you use the MF bonnet (on the G-100) to remove just the wax and the rest by hand using a MF?

                    Comment

                    • #11
Use 9006 with pure polishes as well.

It seems to work best to remove #83/#80 by hand, and I think some have said with a good terry cloth works best.

The polish is probably best by hand, MF or terry cloth.

Wax can also be either way, though using the DA can leave a little more shine behind I think. You will want to put the bonnet over a CLEAN pad. Since you will want to keep one pad clean and unused for this, it is good to use the 7006 cutting pad under the bonnets. DO NOT apply product with the 7006 pad, only use it under the bonnet.

Here is a link to product/pad/and speed settings that might be good to print out:

                        Hi Scott,

This looks good, if I might add... take your time, don't rush the steps in which you're using the cleaner/polishes. Focus on working a small section at at time and when you move onto a new section, be sure to overlap into the previous section.

Thanks for that link to the products/pads/speed. I was looking for that but I must've been in the wrong place.

I really appreciate all the help I have received. This is just a downright awesome forum, the responses are quick and nobody ever treats you like you're an idiot. There is a lot that I dont know, but with a tool like this forum, I feel like I can tackle just about anything....except for a rotary! We'll give that some time.

                          Thanks again to everyone.
