  • D.A. on a stick!

We do our share of RVs and travel trailers. In the past we would have to use a ladder to do the upper areas. After a small area was done we had to climb down from the ladder move it over a few feet and climb back up. A 40foot RV that needs a go with #49 then polished, then waxed is a heck of allot of climbing up and down the ladder.

So I used my head and came up with my "DA on a stick"!!!

I glued the handle from a paint roller to the back of my DA. I then wrapped it in tape. I use an extention pole I bought at home depot that I screw into the handle.

It has reduced our time we took to do RVs by more than half.

    Hey Joe,

Great idea!!! I know what you mean about RV's! My legs are so sore the next day from climbing up and down the ladder!!

If you want to make that pole permanent, maybe you could fiberglass the PC to the pole and rig up some kind of remote switch.

    Just an idea.

I get tired just looking at the R.V. and thinking of detailing it. Not only do you tackle these huge jobs but you produce amazing results. Now add onto that the innovations you've come up with; when I grow up, I wanna be like Superior Shine!

        Hi Joe,

You told me about this idea and ever since I've been curios about it. Looks like a real-time saver. You should post this in the "New Products Suggestions" forum.

I'll have to share this with both my dad and my Father-in-law as they both own 40' Motorhomes and dual action polisher.

I can see using this rig for applying wax. But for polishing, it might a bit difficult since you need to apply some pressure on the pad. Being extended, most likely you need to push a bit harder to overcome the leverage force fighting against. Of course if you have strong arms shouldn't be an issue. Also you might need to climb up the ladder to check the work. But I am pretty sure with experience it might not need to be. Just thinking out loud, to remove the polish, I can see Joe rigging up a GC wash mop with a microfiber bonnet. Kind of like one of those floor sweepers. Yep, he will have someone sew an elastic band on his MF towels. That way, he will polish and wipe off the polish without even getting up the ladder.

Why not work from side to side and top to bottom using some scaffolding? Wouldn't that save time and ensure the quality of work?

By the time you had the scaffold set up I would be done.

The last RV we did was a 36 foot badly oxidised fiberglass motor home.
Our first step was to wash it with DI water and hyper wash.
The next step was to deep clean the fiberglass with #49 using my DA on a stick with Meguiars 6 inch maroon foam pad.
Next I went over the RV with a clean maroon pad covered with a micro fiber bonnet. Then we used a 8006 to apply #21. That was removed with a M8000 covered with a microfiber bonnet.

I think this is a real alternative:

                    WS 702 VE
The FLEX Giraffe: the long-necked solution for sanding and polishing
The long-necked sander from FLEX has revolutionized surface finishing prior to wallpapering or plastering. Ceilings and walls over three meters tall can be reached without ladders or scaffolding. Dust development and cleaning costs for overhead work are reduced to a minimum, because the patented dust collection system takes care of everything.
The swivel-mounted sanding head and cushioned sanding pad achieve perfect sanding results. Grooves and scratches are prevented, and optimum weight distribution (sanding head at the front, motor at the rear) makes it ideal for longer jobs. It can be used for an almost unlimited range of applications, thanks to the variety of FLEX sanding media available. The Giraffe is therefore not only used in dry construction and renovation work, but also on automobiles and containers and in boat building.

FLEX VE electronic control: for infinitely-adjustable speed control
Vacuuming system: with ring brush on the protective hood, flexible vacuum hose from the sanding pad to guiding pipe. Connection option for S 36 industrial vacuum cleaner on rear end of guiding pipe
                    Velcro Adapter: large surface, cushioned

                    Features at a glance
                    - vacuum attachment for almost dust free sanding
                    - continuous variable speed
                    - cushioned holder for Velcro sandpaper
                    - total length 1.6m

Great innovation Joe.........But I've always heard that the W-7006 pad can mar the finish when used with a PC........Do you use this combo on car paint?

nice idea..but can you do the same and enough pressure everywhere? i mean on the long reach distance i guess the pressure goes down and depending on the product you use...

but hey afterall it`s a splendid idea

The weight of the DA and the dual action of the machine is suffient to clean and polish every square inch pretty nice.
