  • Ultimate Polish on Red pad vs Ultimate Compound on Yellow Pad

I just wanted to see what the consensus would be for aggressiveness between these combinations.

I mostly stuck with ultimate compound, but just adjust from Yellow pad to Red pad (3 inch pads), adjust pressure and DA polisher speed.

But I wondered if anybody tried using Red pad with Ultimate Polish.

You could give it a shot. M205 offers more correction that UP. You may want to invest in it. It is very versatile with different pad combinations.

I used the burgundy part on a rotary years ago. The plan sounds similar to what I did today with swirl x.

In the interest of assembling a "travel" kit, I wanted to lessen the load, and eliminate having two bottles. SwirlX was chosen because it's stronger than Ultimate Polish, and will likely finish smoother than Ultimate Compound.

The next step was to select a suitable pad. Normally I'd use my standard polishing pad, a Blue Hex Logic, or a Green Lake Country CCS pad. The thing is that I would need to access the cut from the abrasives, and these pads do better to refine the finish, than to correct it.

The next idea was to use my compounding pad, the Green Hex Logic, or Pink LC CCS. These pads are also said th be great for this application. However, the machine I'm using, is a Craftsman d/a, and doesn't like the softer pads

I ended up using a stray Orange Hex logic, medium cutting pad, and it was awesome! Paired with SwirlX, it did a good enough job tackling the scratches, totally killed the swirls, and finished down well enough. I still have more experimenting to do, but I have high hopes for this combination.

Re: Ultimate Polish on Red pad vs Ultimate Compound on Yellow Pad

A very mild polish like UP paired with an aggressive pad like our burgundy foam cutting pad is a somewhat unusual and, it has to be said, rather odd pairing. What exactly are you trying to accomplish? M205 is a very versatile product that can do anything from super fine finishing when used on a foam finishing pad, to surprisingly fast cutting if paired with a microfiber cutting pad. That latter pairing is a bit unusual and generally requires very heavy use of M205. It was pioneered by Kevin Brown for getting a lot of cut on delicate paint that hazes easily. As such, it's not a common pairing.

Now, having said that, we have used M205 quite sparingly on a burgundy foam pad in conjunction with a lot of water, but only to finish out haze free on super soft paint that would otherwise haze no matter what we did. A combo like that is mostly going to be used when more traditional combinations just aren't working on really finicky paint.

So, again, what are you trying to accomplish? What is it about adapting UC or anything else to different pads that is not giving you what you want?
