  • W67DA Backing Plate Question

    Hello MOL Community,

I searched around the internet and the forums but haven't been able to find an answer for my question about the W67DA backing plate. They "have a nylon or plastic washer/spacer attached to the spindle". So my question is, do i still need to use a compression washer with it?

You can refer to the quoted statement and pictures here: http://www.meguiarsonline.com/forums...g-Plate-Review!!!!

    Thanks!

    Re: W67DA Backing Plate Question

No compression washer needed in addition to the nylon spacer.

They also have a nylon or plastic washer/spacer attached to the spindle so that the plate does not cinch down too tightly making it difficult to remove. The washer/spacer also allows more room for the rivets that hold plates together.
The spacer, as the above quote states, provides space to get your flat wrench in between the backing plate and counterweight on the buffer. Without the spacer, it is difficult to get the wrench on the nut. And secondarily, the spacer prevents the rivets on the back of the backing plate from banging into the counterweight while the buffer runs. If the rivets hit the counterweight, besides obvious damage to the rivets, there's bad vibrations and the risk of metal particles from the collision of rivets and spinning counterweight ending up marring your paint.

I've read where some folks use two washers/spacers to allow more space between counterweight and backing plate, but a compression or lock washer is not needed. I tape the spacer to the backing plate when the backing plate is not mounted on the buffer. This prevents losing the spacer. I remove the tape before mounting the plate onto the buffer.

A little trick to NOT loose the washer is get one of the rubber/plastic cap thingies that will fit over the stud.

They are used to cover the ends of 'All-Thread," the rough ends of cut metal rod (like closet system items). Check out your local hardware store, about a dollar or so.

This fully answers the question, with all the solid reasoning behind the answer. Don't skip the washer!

For sure! I've read many times about never forgetting it =). I own a w68da backing plate (removable washer), but when i received my w67da backing plate, i found it odd that the washer was attached permanently on the it. Are there any other backing plates (by any company) that also has an attached washer?
