why is my foam polishing pad heating up?

hey guys this weekend i was buffing a friends car and well i was using a soft buff 2.0 pad with M80 on my g110v2 and i was using it for a couple hrs stopping here and there, then all of a sudden i started to notice the center of the pad was starting to heat up. The machine was staying perfectly cool and gave me no problems, then just toward the end of the detail the pad just got hot and hot, so i would let it cool off then continue. could this be because the pad was getting clogged? or i was using too much pressure? idk ive never had this problem before. this pad has been used about 3 times to do full car details. i tried to clean it so often with a microfiber over the pad then turning on the machine. Just wanna get some opinions why this was happening, thanks

My guess is build up of product soaking into the pad. This causes the heat build up, and will lead to pad failure. Might want to use more than one pad for corrections. I usually use 3 pads for paint correction/polishing.

Heat build up on a pad when used on a DA tends to concentrate toward the center of the pad, and product will collect more in the center of the pad as well. For comparison sake, on a rotary the heat will tend to build up more toward the outer edge of the pad.

If you used just a single pad for the entire vehicle, and you had to get fairly aggressive with it (pressure, speed, combo of the two) it will get warm over time. Keeping it clean is a good idea, of course, but as RPPM points out it's not a bad idea at all to swap to a fresh pad during the course of a full detailing session. When cleaning, using a terry cloth towel rather than microfiber will likely pull more product out of the pad, helping to further reduce that build up of both product and heat.
