  • GG6 for fiberglass?

I am looking at waxing my boat that has some oxidation. Not horrible chalky stuff but underlying defects are slightly visible.

I am looking for a tool to help apply either Meg

    Boy - my apologies!

My post was copied from a word doc I used to draft it and it turned out horrible. Here is how the message should have read:

I am looking for a tool to help apply either Meg’s #50 cleaner wax or the Flagship cleaner/ wax. I was going to buy the Groits GG6 but after reading some more I hear a lot of people say DA’s are not aggressive enough for fiberglass and a standard rotary is better because of the aggressiveness it can offer.

My question is, I know the GG6 can be variable speed, but can if offer the same aggressiveness as a rotary on fiberglass?

I have 2 polishers I work on boats with frequently both are dual action one is a cyclo and the other is a portercable. I've found that its more pad choice and compound that make the biggest difference. Wool pads will give you a heavier cut then foam That being said I usually use foam with a putoduct called buff magic that works very well. I have also had good results with megs one step and the oxidation remover. How much is the girots garage polisher?

Also the cleaner wax isnt very agressive so your style of polisher shouldnt mean much unless you are compounding.
        Hope this helps!

I can't give you advice about working on fiberglass but if your going to buy a DA check out the G110v2 over the GG. It seems more and more there are threads coming up about the quality of the GG units. I was ready to pull the trigger and order one myself till I started doing a bit more digging. I have two G110's now so don't really "need" a new machine so for now I'll wait and see if Meg's comes out with a G110v3 at SEMA this year.

Both the G110v2 & GG6 are great units, I don't think you will have issues with either ( I have one of each)
I think correct pad & compound choices are more important factors than the DA you choose tho.

That tool should be more than up to the task, but if you're looking to remove any oxidation then even a cleaner wax alone may not be the best choice. You might want to start with our M49 Oxidation Remover first with a foam cutting pad, then step down to your wax with a finishing pad. If the oxidation is really bad then M67 One Step Compound can do wonders. Without actually seeing the boat it's a bit difficult to say for sure which product you should start with, but the above guidelines should help.

For more information on just how effective this process can be, take a look at this thread.
