It's the 6" model. I'd like to purchase a velcro backing plate, so I'm assuming I should get a 6" BP. no?
I searched and I'm stummped on finding one solid answer.
Dual-Action Hook & Loop Flexible Backing Plate - The best backing plates for the Porter Cable 7424 Dual Action Polisher! If German car makers think this backing plate is good enough to use on their top-of-the-line vehicles, you can bet it is the ...
Do NOT forget to use the washer. Just my 2 cents worth I had a PC and it did not do the job or had enough power. I ended up with megs GV110V2 and it works great expecially with built in cruise control. (Constant speed with variable load)
Depends on the pads you want to use. Foam or microfiber, size of pad 3", 4", 5", 6" or 7" and a little bit manufacturer.
If just starting, I might suggest the Meguiars 6" plate for the 7" Soft Buff 2.0 foam pads: W68DA
Thanks ..I'm having a look at youtube, and they're showing all of it. I guees it depends on *what* I'm polishing.
Growing up in Hawaii .. I've had my fair share of "buffing" .. from surfboards to ski boats and even my very own Prindle catamarans.
I've never used a DA before, so I joined this site and I'm just trying to study as much as I can.
Even with my humongous Makita, I never burnt a board, boat or a car. I'm anxious to get to know my DA.
It also appears that the product has changed somewhat. (waxes, polishes, compounds) So, there's a learning curve there as well.
So much useful info on this site and youtube. My Porter Cable came with the counter weight, 6" polishing pad, wrench and manual.
I actually intend to use the Meguiar's UC followed by the UP all by hand .. in small sections. Then use the PC for a final waxing.
But after watching some youtube, this PC looks to be pretty spectacular. My paint is 7 months old. ($2500.00) and it's a cobalt blue pearl.
(OEM color)
It was color buffed by my auto paint guy, but since then, it hasn't been detailed. After washing several times, I have water spots etc ..
I feel pretty confident with what experiance I have with my Makita rotary .. now it's just a matter of matching the right pads with the right product and so forth.
So much has changed over the years, technology and what-not .. wow! Kind of overwhelming.
Thanks for the quick and concise reply .. There's so much to learn, and sooo lil time ..

Dual Action Backing Plates - A molded urethane backing plate for excellent flexibility and balance. If German carmakers think this backing plate is good enough to use on their top-of-the-line vehicles, you can bet it is the best plate you can buy for your vehicle. BMW and Mercedes-Benz both hail these backing plates as the best because of the outstanding properties of molded urethane. These Dual-Action Flexible Backing Plates minimize heat transfer, flexes to hug your vehicles curves, and are built to last. And they are the best backing plates you can buy for the Porter Cable 7424 Dual-Action Polisher. Molded Urethane is where its at. This material is flexible yet incredibly durable. This plate will last through countless, rigorous uses without falling apart or becoming unbalanced. Balancing is essential when it comes to polishers because an unbalanced plate will bounce, leaving an uneven finish. The reinforced inner construction uses steel struts molded into the center hub to give the plate stability and maintain an even surface for your pad. Another benefit of urethane is its resistance to heat. The Flex Backing Plate minimizes the transfer of heat from the motor to the paint to prevent burning. Spontaneous heat build-up is also reduced. Remove and replace pads easily from the Velcro surface. The Velcro is molded into the plate so it will not come off. The Flexible Backing Plate LC-43-125DA measures 5 Inches in Diameter and is perfect for pads up to 7.5. The Flexible Backing Plate LC-43-148DA measures 6 Inches in Diameter and is perfect for pads 7.5" up to 8.5. These pad are great for the Porter Cable 7424 because it has a generous lip. Even if you turn the pad onto its side accidentally, there is an inch of soft, beveled urethane between the edge of the plate and the inner construction. The threaded post fits any polisher with a 5/16 diameter. Use the backing plate preferred by some of the leading car manufacturers in the world to put the final touches on their vehicles. Our Dual-Action Flexible Backing Plate provides the safest, most durable surface for your pads so that you get the best performance possible from your dual-action polisher.
Is that a Porter Cable product, or is it a Lake Country product?
And what's the difference, if any at all? hmm. Pretty confusiong the way that's writ up ..

Thoses backing plates are Lake Country. Notice the "LC" on the part number?

Only difference is the size.

Yes .. and thanks Bill. I've read all over the place that the LC BP is fine for our PC's?
I've just got so many decisions to make over here ..
I might just step away for a day lol! Input over-load. Tools, accessories, product, materials, right way, wrong way .. ***faint***
I'm still waiting for my PC to arrive anyway ..

Don't go crazy looking at all the goodies that are available..."You'll go blind...". You have a good DA coming, get a BP for either a 5 inch or 6 inch, that's your choice. Personally I like a 5 inch pad, but I do use a 6 incher a lot also.
Pick up a bottle of Ultimate Compound, Ultimate Polish>>>you'll be good to go (or is that start?).
Not to be disrespective...Go slow grasshopper. It will all make sense in time.
I would also like to suggest one additional accessory if you don't have it already: ear protector. PC is kind of noisy. With relative constant frequency, it is not good for your ears for prolong use. Just my $0.02.

Haha, Thanks Bill .. and yes, the plan is to use a little UC, then follow up with the UP .. then the UW ...
I even bought a botttle of UD ..
I believe what I've settled on is a 3" and 5" BP .. to go with 4"-4.5" pads and 5.5"-6" pads?

Appreciate the heads up .. I'll wear my head-phones ..
The 3" & 5" sounds good. 4 inch pads are nice for doing things like the "A" pillars, those area that a bigger pad just won't fit. You will find areas that a machine driven just won't fit, gonna have to do those areas by hand.
When you begin, do a smallish (foot by a foot or so) as a test area. This way you can dial in what you need to do and how you need to do.
As has been stated over and over and over...LEAST aggressive method first! Example only: White pad w UP @ speed 5-6...how does that look? Not enough? Step up a pad (orange in LC) drop the speed a touch. Three things to remember, aggressiveness is from product, 'coarseness' of the pad and the speed of the machine. Any change in the equation and the final answer will differ.
See where I'm going? Good, now grab the pebble from my hand (LOL).
