  • G220 play on main spindle - Normal?

Hi all, I have had my G220 for over 3 years now and have recently started using it with my new job. I noticed that the main spindle (that you screw the backing plate onto) has some side to side play causing vibration whilst buffing.

I don't remeber this being normal but I haven't used it for a few months.

Could you let me know if this is normal and if not what can be done about rectifying it.

If it does need repairing/replacing I will be disappointed as I have only machine polished approx 8-9 cars with it.

    Many thanks
    Mark

No it is not normal. Might be the bad bearing.

How much free play do you have? If it's something you can't really see but can feel ever so slightly, you're perfectly fine. There's quite a bit of vibration inherent in a DA buffer just due to the action of the tool, but if you're getting additional vibration caused by free play in the spindle you've got a problem. This would be a pretty unusual occurrence with this tool, by the way.

Hi, I would say that there is approx 2-3mm of play in the spindle. I had a look inside and it does appear to be the spindle itself that has worn rather than the bearings, as there is visible wear on the spindle shaft.

It still works ok but as you can imagine with the extra movement in the pad/spindle the vibration gets worse on higher speeds.

I have had a good look online and can't find any replacement parts so I assume they are not available?

          Thanks

In that case what I would suggest is taking it to any motor repair shop they could grind the shaft and install a hardened bushing and at same time replace the bearing. This is what I would try if I was in your position. For me, at our prices here I would get a new one.
