Not quite two years ago I bought a DA (being completely new to the process). Frankly, my expectations were not met inasmuch as my efforts didn't seem to produce the same results I saw on many posts to the Meguiar's forum. When considering the new microfiber system, I saw a demo where a mark was placed on the backing plate to observe the rotation of the backing plate/pad. I did that and to my shock, the backing plate wasn't spinning at all unless I put virtually no pressure on the unit. Even then it didn't spin so well. The last time I used it I actually had to hold it slightly off the surface of the paint so that it was barely making contact. No wonder I wasn't getting any results. I wasn't polishing at all! I don't think the thing has worked properly from the beginning.
I thought perhaps the brushes might need to be replaced (I have used it probably a total of 10 times and I have a small car), but I found that I'd have to send the unit to the manufacturer for the brushes to be replaced. Not only that, the threads on the side handle were stripped after just a few uses, rendering the handle useless.
I've decided to bite the bullet and buy a Meguiar's 110v2 (they've been back ordered a long time), intrigued by the idea that it has more torque and therefore won't stop spinning when I apply pressure to it (and I'm not talking about a lot of pressure here--usually no more than the weight of the unit). I hope I finally see the results I originally expected.
Anyone want to buy a used Porter Cable 7424XP that doesn't work so well? Best offer plus shipping.
