  • pads and backing plates

    Hello.
I need some clarification on Meguiar's product pads and backing plates.

    Under the consumer line:

W-DAV99 is DA Velcro Buffing System. This product has two W-8006 and one W-9006 pad. These pads are permanently attached to a backing plate. I would screw out the pad and backing plate when I wanted to switch to another chemical product. Am I correct in my understanding of the combination of backing plate with foam pad as one unit? (wish they had a picture)

WDAV99-B Set of 3 Polishing Pads. These pads are different than the ones above. I would need to get the backing plate from the professional line to use with this? They attach with velcro. 3 pads.

    Under the professional line:

I can purchase individual SOFTBUFFâ„¢ Finishing Pad W-9006,
Soft Buff® Foam Polishing Pads W-8006. What is the difference between these individual pads and the WDAV99-B pads above?

I can purchase and individual backing plate-- Dual-Action Polisher Backing Plates-- W-64DA.

I am confused. The G100 kit sold comes with the professional backing plate and the professional pad?

What is the deal between the products in the two categories of professional versus consumer?

If my perception of the products is correct, DA Velcro Buffing System is cheap and I should be getting the backing plate
    W-64DA from the professional line.

Assuming the above sentence was correct, I now need to get pads. I can buy the pads individually from the professional line, or I can buy a 3pack from the consumer line--WDAV99-B Set of 3 Polishing Pads-- and save a couple of bucks??

Thank you in advance for clearing up my total confusion.

These are all just variations on the same theme.

The W-DAV99 system is one backing plate that screws into a polisher and three pads that attach/interchange with Velcro. This is ideal if you have a PC 7424 that didn't come with a Velcro backing plate.

The pads are all the same whether you buy them from the consumer or pro line (note they have the same individual part numbers).

The WDAV99-B pad set is a killer deal for the same pads. It's great if you have a G-100 since it already comes with a backing plate.

      Oh, and to answer your specific questions;

      Yes.

There is no difference in these particular pieces. I would guess that they just group them differently on the site because they expect pros and consumers to have slightly different needs.

The chemical products are different between the two lines because the end users are very different in their needs. There are some differences in the hardware ranges due to expected use not quality (which is uniformly excellent). For example they don't expect (or necessarily encourage) consumers to want rotary backing plates, 8" pads, or any wool pads.

Not correct, it's the same W-64DA from the professional line (and that comes with a G-100).

You can certainly buy them individually but if you need two W-8006 pads and one W-9006 pad (or any multiple thereof) the three pack is a good deal.

To plan what pads you'll want there's a sticky with a product/pad chart over in: Meguiar's Online > Meguiar's Online Garage > The G-100 Dual Action Polisher > Product, Pad and Speed settings for the Porter Cable Dual Action Polisher

Hi again. I don't want to be difficult, but I want to make sure I buy the product that I am want. Returning purchases is a pain.

I have searched the internet and come across photos of two different styles of Maguire pads and backing plates.

Unfortunately, the meguires.com does not have photos and I had to look at photos at other websites selling Meguire products.

First, is the setup I want. It is Meguire DA buffer backing plate. This allows quick and easy pad changes with velcro. The backing plate screws onto and stays permanently attached to the buffer. This backing plate has a white edge running around it in a circle.

The above is different than the second Meguire setup I have seen photos of. This is Meguire PAD WITH BACKING PLATE. The lip running around the edge is thinner and does not have the white band. To change pads, simply unscrew the pad/backing plate and screw on another one.

To my eyes, and to the description of how to replace them, they are very, very different.
The first setup you just take the pad off the velcro, the second setup you take the combo pad/backing plate, unscrew the combo, and then screw on the new combo unit.

Am I imagining the diffences in the descriptions and photos I have come across????

          Fletch,

Could you post a link to the second backing plate you are talking about? I believe there may be some confusion as to what is Meguiar's and what is not.

          Set of 3 pads - WDAV99-B

          $24.95

          DA Velcro Buffing System

          $32.95

This is what I don't want:

The picture of the G100 is the same as the one below.

The backing plate looks like the picture on the following link:

I would prefer to order the 3pad kit and save money if these are really all the same. Perhaps I am overthinking...

The first one is in fact fixed to the backing plate. I have never seen this type offered by Meguiar's before.

I would highly recommend the velcro backing plate and the 3 pad kit. You should have 1 pad per product. That should help you plan on how many pads you will need.
