  • Pads for Griots 6" DA - Will the Megs 8207 and 9207 fit?

Looking at replacing my 9 yr old PC DA with a Griots 6" as I am reading the Griots has more power.

My question is, will the backing plate that comes with the Griots work with the Megs 8207 and 9207 pads?

I am leaning toward the standard cord model instead of the 25 footer simply because, even with a 25 foot cord, I will STILL probably have to run an extension cord - thoughts either way?

You can use Soft Buff 2.0 pads with GG6 but the best would be to purchase Meguiar's W68DA backing plate to go with them.

      Thanks Greg.
What is the difference between the griots plate and the megs?

The Griots backing plate will be fine. You don't have to use a Megs backing plate in order to use their pads.

Maybe I should have asked that plate that comes on the griots unit is the correct size for the megs pads?

You should be fine. Both the W67DA and the W68DA work on the softbuff 2.0 pads. The BP that comes with the GG6 is bigger than the W67DA so you should be fine. The reason why others have recommended the W68DA is because it's made to fit the recessed area of the softbuff 2.0 pads.

Technically, yes, you can use the backing plate that comes with the GG6 tool when using our Soft Buff 2.0 pads. But the Griot's backing plate is a bit small in diameter so you're not going to get full support behind the pad with it. This is important in order to obtain a more uniform and consistent cut across the face of the pad, and to support the pad properly when working on curved body panels. So while you can affix a Soft Buff 2.0 pad to the Griot's backing plate and it will stick, a backing plate is much more than simply the thing that sticks the pad to the tool. In the long run you really are better off using our W68DA backing plate with the Soft Buff 2.0 pads.

Why is it that the W67DA is ok to use with the softbuff 2.0 pads? I've talked to someone in Meg's before and the person I talked to said both W67DA and the W68DA are ok to use it. Please don't get me wrong because I completely understand that the pad works better with a bigger support and this is achieved with the W68DA.

                    Just a follow up...

I bought the Griots machine and the Megs backing plate, the Megs plate is about 1/4 larger than the one that came with the Griots unit. As far as I am concerned I didn't need to buy the megs backing plate but it's no big deal, now I'll take the Griots plate and put it on my old PC machine, it needed a new one anyway.

As we said above, while technically you can use either backing plate with the Soft Buff 2.0 pads (technically, as in the pad will stick to the backing plate) there's a whole lot more to backing plates than merely connecting the pad to the buffer. A small(ish) diameter backing plate on a large(ish) diameter pad is not going to give full support across the face of the pad, and you're going to lose cutting ability. The Soft Buff 2.0 pads, at 7", just flat out perform better with the W68DA backing plate since it gives broader support, and flexible support at that, across the face of the pad. Now, on some other forums you'll read that a 7" pad is just too big to use on a DA, but if you look through the threads with pictures from our Saturday Classes you'll see that that's all we ever use, and we don't even pair it with M105 - we use Ultimate Compound. And we've corrected a pretty broad range of makes/models with all kinds of defects, including cars that are so often referred to as having really, really hard paint. Corvettes, Audis, Mercedes, etc. Rotary swirls, year old bird dropping etchings, and all kinds of other problems the owners never could fix, we got them out with UC, a 7" polishing pad (never a cutting pad) and a G110v2.

Hey guys I was just reading through this, I think I am about to get a GG6 as well. From reading above, I will purchase the Meguiars 7" backing plate. My question is, what do I do for a smaller pad? I think I remember reading somewhere that Meguiars has a 4" pad which would mean they may have a 4" backing plate? I'm new to this whole polisher thing so if someone could clear this up for me that would be great. Like I said, essentially I want to know what I need to purchase to use smaller pads with a GG6 so I can easily do A-Pillars and other "small" areas.

Yes, if you want to use 4" pads you will need to purchase a 4" backing plate for use with them.

You will want to purchase our S3BP for use with our 4" pads.

If you really want the Megs backing plate buy it, but you don't need it. The one that comes with the Griots machine works just fine with the Megs 7" pads.
