  • Traditional rotary/wool vs. DA MF

So I'm workin on a 1962 corvette doing some test sections to find the best combo and I figure I'll need the rotary+twisted ply wool+M105 to cut through the severe neglect. I do a test section and it looks great, but obviously needs refining. So I use the PCXP with the MF+D300 and it looks amazing!

At that point I thought, well lets test ONLY the D300 on the other side of the tape line. I got nearly identical results...so close it makes near no difference. I spent more time working the D300 by itself, but doing that 1 step vs the 2 step on the other side it saved a lot of time and produced great results. Here's a few pics I took.

Rotary + twisted ply wool pad + M105. Followed by MF D300.

Other side with MF D300 ONLY.

And a side by side shot

    This system is truly amazing.

    Doesn't D300 contain fillers?

[This is a thick, gray colour cleaner wax that uses both ultra fine SMAT abrasives to lightly polish the paint as well as leave behind a formidable blended wax (synthetic and carnauba wax).]

You're thinking of D301. But to be on the safe side I did an IPA wipedown anyway.

D300 is the correction compound, not the finishing wax. D300 with the microfiber cutting disc, used properly on a DA, can provide an amazing level of cut. D301 Finishing Wax does have the ability to hide, sure (as does virtually any wax or sealant), but it also makes use of the SMAT abrasives in it and the cut of the microfiber finishing disc to actually remove haze, fine tick marks, etc.

But to be really candid, looking at the defects on this car, we're surprised that you'd consider rotary/wool/M105 necessary. Sure, it looks pretty bad, but that is one extremely aggressive process. Unless, of course, the paint is known to be very resistant to polishing.

The car was in very poor shape, but this was one of the test sections to figure out what combo I wanted to go with. When I post the writeup you'll see how bad it was.
