  • What type of bonnet for ScratchX & Ultimate Compound??

I am trying to remove some stubborn water spots on my car with ScratchX and was wondering what type of bonnet to use with a DA polisher? ... foam?... terry bonnet?... And the same question for using the Ultimate Compound... (if the ScratchX doesn't work)... what type of bonnets for which product to get the best results?... I'm new to the forum and any info would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi Phantom,

What kind of buffer exactly do you have? Are you sure it is a DA and not an orbital?

As for bonnet (or pad) type, a yellow Meguiar's polishing pad is probably your best starting point for those products. Terry bonnets aren't something Meguiar's offers, so anything along those lines would be outside our realm.

On a slightly different note, however, Meguiar's did recently introduce a new microfiber pad system for the DA, but it is intended to be used with its own liquid products specific to the system.

Hi Mark.... It's a polisher/orbital but with "random" feature to prevent burning : http://www.amazon.com/6-Random-Orbit...7462248&sr=8-1

It comes with a terry and syn. wool bonnet. I got it as a gift from family along with ScratchX and Ultimate Compound, since they were always hearing my complaints about water spots on my car :P I'm familiar with hand detailing but wanted to cut down on some elbow grease!....But don't worry, i haven't done any type of correction yet. I wanted to get expert opinions first about the bonnets and technique before i make a hot mess of everything..... So what would you suggest?

I'm surprised nobody answered this for you after all this time. That Viper product isn't a DA, it's actually more of a "wax applicator". I think if you do a search for "wax applicator" you may find the write up that one of the Meguiar's guys did on these. They can apply polish and wax with a foam bonnet, and can wax-off with a microfiber bonnet, but they aren't powerful / fast enough to do any correction. The DA's (i.e., from Meguiar's, Griots, Porter Cable) are more expensive, more powerful, faster, and most people use velcro-attached foam pads of different levels for different correction steps.
