  • Help needed with my G220

    Hello everybody,

I'm new to the forum and this is my first post. I've registered as I'm looking for some help/advise on my G220 (UK version).

I've recently bought the unit 2nd hand couple of weeks ago as I just couldn't afford a new one. I've bought a set of pads and and few products, all from Meguairs. I've used it for the first time last week - just to test it all - and was very happy with the results on my black car.

This weekend I was planning to the whole car. I've cleaned and prepared in the morning but came accross problems with my G220.
Whenever I press the pad it stops spinning, but the motor still turns. It actually sounds like there's a thread there and is worn as whenever I push it back up it works fine. The problem is that even the slightless pressure or even working on side panels cause the pad the push inside. I've removed the counterweight and the small bearing but I can't move the allan screw as it seem to rotate on the motor. I can move the whole thing by hand and I can see through side vents that it's rotating inside but whenever I press the counterweight it sort of "drops" into that worn out zone. Hopefull my description will make sense to anybody.

My unit is way out of warranty and I believe is V1 model.

This is such a shame as I invested all that money and just cant enjoy it. I know it's 2nd hand and there a risk but it was working fine last week.

BTW.. I've replaced the carbon brushes at the back for brand new bosh ones.
    Please advice. Regards,

Do you have a washer on the stud of backing plate?

Not sure what washer do you mean mate. I've removed the counterweight and there's an allan shape screw and a washer udner it.

I've made a video of my problem and it can be seen here

      Regards,

The issue seems to be with the bearing that's located behind the yellow metal part. It seems to go up and down easly and looks like some plastic inside has broken.
Anyone has an idea if that's removable and fixable?

The first bearing (the one behind counterweight) is fine. Regards,

I was hoping that someone would have supplied an answer for you, so I'll just toss out an idea.

I don't know the actual manufacture of the G220, but go to Porter Cables web site and take a look at their various sanders/polishers parts layout. You might get an idea of what's inside that could (or can't) be repaired.

          Hope this may help some...

          Bill
