  • Masking off edges to avoid burning paint

hi all .. I've been fairly obsessed with keeping my cars clean for quite some time but have only recently, after a LOT of reading, felt comfortable to try paint correction .. I have a 2006 G35 coupe and I'm either purchasing the PC7424XP or the Meg G110V2 .. my question is .. I have read that towards the edges on the body panels the paint is thinner and has a much higher chance of being burned through .. what I want to know is should I tape off the edges of every panel while using the DA or is the risk of burning through the paint highly unlikely since it's not a rotary (I rarely see videos of DA use and tape on edges) ?? also, if I did decide to tape off the edges, how would I go about removing the swirls that hid under the tape ?? do I go at them by hand ?? finally, if I went with the G110V2, would the lake country pads work just as fine as they do with the PC ?? thanks again and I can't tell you how many times threads on here have helped me out

    Welcome to Meguiar's Online.

Yes, the edges are thinner. Dual action machines are safe so unless you go extremely aggressive there's no risk of burning through. For those hard to reach areas you could use 4" spot buffing pads or work by hand with an applicator.

Here are the tips from Mike Phillips about taping off:
Tips on Taping Off Thin Paint and Chipped Paint When I first brought the 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass to the shop I had originally planned to carefully Dam

Yes, G110v2 can be used with Lake Country backing plates/ buffing pads. Porter Cable, Griot's Garage and Meguiar's use standard thread size 5/16"-24 on their DAs.

thanks a lot for the reply, much appreciated very excited to start machine polishing now that I can finally keep my car in a garage .. last question .. last year I did a few touch up spots on my paint from minor rock chips .. if I machine polish, will that pull up the paint or cause any damage (i.e. front of my hood has a few places where I touched up) ?? .. your reply helps a lot as I'm still learning and want to avoid as many mistakes as possible .. thanks again

If you applied enough paint to those rock chip spots it shouldn't be a problem at all. If a fresh layer is thin however then you may expose primer (small chance working with DA) and you need to re-apply it.

You're gonna like working with a DA polisher. It makes all detailing steps easier: from defect removal through polishing to wax application.
