  • confused about some things..

    hi evryone..wanna ask sumthing..

I'm now considering to buy DA G110V2 coz i hav an audi and evrbody tells me that it has hard paint..

what i want to ask is, can DA guarantee that it can tackle even the hardest of paint??(using the correct method, of course)

can it cause permanent damage to my paint if i use it wrong??coz evrybody said that DA is very easy to use..could it cause holograms and other paint defects??

what us the difference btween G110, G220, G100PC,etc..i know there's a thread bout this, but i don't understands it..which one is easier to use?btw, what is (PC) stands for??

i'm sorry if i ask a lot of things..but i wanna be really sure bout this thing first..coz i live in indonesia and it's really pricey here..like US$330 when converted from IDR..

Using a DA car polisher wil make your work faster and more effective. I'm sure that you already know how hard is to remove below surface paint defects working by hand. However there are some limits and DA machines work generally slower than rotary buffers because when you apply moderate down pressure they can stall and quit rotating (which is necessary for cleaning and polishing).

You won't be able to correct everything. Deep scratches, deep sanding marks may be out of range. But most defects can be corrected with DAs.
Working on hard factory paints (like Audis) may require more time, more down pressure and more passes.

DA polishers are generally very safe. The learning period is super short. You can get familiar with your machine pretty quickly. Most common side effects left by DAs could be haze, micro-marring, some swirls and it all depends on paint type (hard/ soft/ factory-original/ resprayed) and technique.

Meguiar's DA polisher G110v2 or G220v2 has so called cruise control which increases torque, when down pressure is applied, to maintain its constant speed. The numbers 110 and 220 stand for voltage. In the USA we use 110V electricity, Europe and Asia operate on 220V.

PC stands for Porter Cable, the US company which introduced DA polishers to the detailing world. Their newest/ current version is model 7424 XP.

Our Administrator, Mike Stoops, wrote a great article about Introduction to DA polishers so get yourself familiar with it:

One thing to keep in mind once you do buy a DA, it may take a few applications to get the proper results. If your paint truly is hard paint, you'll probably have to go over it a few times with M105 on polishing pad.

I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.

            I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.

Meguiar's always promotes to go with a least aggressive product to do the work.
Automotive clear coats are pretty thin, usually around 2 mils, of which 1.2 - 1.5 mils is necessary to provide enough protection for the base coat.

M105 Ultra Cut Compound is Meguiar's most aggressive one. Of course it offers less cutting with DA polishers than using it with a rotary buffer.
It's always good to do a little test spot to see which product works best in certain situation.

In many cases Ultimate Compound can provide very similar results to M105 with dual action machines (UC doesn't dust so much and offers longer buffing cycle without drying quickly) but there may be times when more aggressive Ultra Cut Compound may be needed.

Kevin Brown Method (pad priming/ moisturizing) is a great solution to extend buffing time of M105.

Dig through these two threads and it will be explained why Meguiar's doesn't recommend using a cutting pad with a DA.

Meguiar's suggests that you stay away from using a cutting pad on a DA. The polishing pad with M105 can do a lot more than you could ever imagine. A finishing pad on the other hand is not designed to have cut.

well..it said that if you use M105 with cutting pad, it'll create hazing or micro marring (not really sure what that is)..but it is also said that if you continue it with polisher or mild abrasive like SwirlX, it'll be fine..am i right??

                              Re: confused about some things..

We really recommend that you stay away from the cutting pad not only because of its tendency to haze the paint, but also because they can fail when used on a D/A. This was explained in one of the threads David linked to, and it happens because of the extra drag created by the cutting pad and the heat that is then generated on the hook and loop attachment system. This phenomenon occurs not just with Meguiar's pads, but with others as well - there are plenty of threads on other forums about this same thing.

Just because someone tells you that you have hard paint doesn't necessarily mean it's so. We've worked on some cars in our Saturday Classes that supposedly had very hard paint and we were able to correct them with a polishing pad and Ultimate Compound. Technique is critically important in this whole process - use them wrong and even an aggressive cutting pad and very aggressive compound can't work magic.
