Re: I got a porter cable. need help!
Yes - The Porter Cable 7424 is a "DA" (Dual Action) polisher.
As for pads... typically need Polishing and Finishing pads - you can probably start with 2-3 of each (exact quantity really depends on how much work you'll be doing).
Also want to pick-up some Clay, Quik Detailer, Microfiber towels (assuming you don't already own this stuff)
Not so easy recommending compounds & polishes because it really depends on type of paint, degree of swirls & scratches, etc.
- Posting info like make, model, year of car, color of paint, pix of swirls & scratches, etc. will make it much easier for everyone to provide useful info.Andy W.

Re: I got a porter cable. need help!
Chances are you're going to clean up light scratches with Scratch-X and medium scratches with Ultimate Compound with a polishing pad.
If you can feel the scratches with your fingernails, they may be too deep to remove without thinning the clear coat excessively.
BTW - since you're in South OC, you should sign-up for a Detailing 101 Class @ Meguiar's in Irvine.Andy W.

Re: I got a porter cable. need help!
A good starting point is going to be a few of the W8207 polishing pads and at least one W9207 finishing pad for starters. Use Ultimate Compound with the W8207 pads and your favorite wax with the W9207.
We see you're signed up for our October 23rd detailing class, but we've also got plenty of space for this week's Thursday Night Open Garage. You're not that far away, can you make it up for that? We'll put a buffer in your hands and let you get a feel for what works best in your situation. All free of charge, of course. Nothing like hands on training to get you started off right.Michael Stoops

Re: I got a porter cable. need help!
The sign up thread for tomorrow night is HERE
You can leave your buffer at home since we have plenty here, but we'll definitely let you work on your own car! We don't have the time or space for you to fully detail it on Thursday, but you'll leave with the confidence and skill needed to complete the task at home over the weekend. We hope to see you here!Michael Stoops
