  • Backing plate for DA

I'm using 5" backing plate with 7" pads.

Thinking of getting 3" plate and use it with 4" pads in order to improve efficiency and get a better result.

    Opinions please.

You'll be glad that you have the 3" backing plate and 4" pads. It's almost a must. Instead of fighting the 7" pads into doing areas they were never intended to do. The 4" pads will handle those areas with little effort.

Put it this way, you can do just about every nook and cranny, including the larger areas with the 4" pads, you can't say the same thing about the 7".

Even if you only have one polisher, changing out the backing plate from 5" to 3" is no big deal, plan your polishing job correctly and you only need to do this once or twice (if you are polishing, then waxing).

I'll give you an analogy. The 7" pads are like the lawn mower and the 4" pads are like the grass trimmer. First you go in with the trimmer and do all the little stuff and tight areas, then you go in with the 7" for the larger areas. You don't have to switch back and forth all the time.

I like to do it in this order 4", then 7". The reason being is I'm less likely to try to get stuff with the 7" that the 4" pads are more suitable for, in an effort to save time. I end up with less ripped pads this way and I end up doing a better job.

I agree with Bill. Getting the smaller backing plate helps to get in to those tighter areas where the 6" and 7" can't get. If you're not in to doing those areas by hand (like me), I would highly recommend getting these. I don't think you will regret it.

Get the Meguiar's backing plate and pads.

I have an off brand rotary backing plate with an adapter for my DA and it repeatedly came loose while buffing, it was very frustrating.

The pads were equally frustrating as the Velcro backing had become too hot (here in Arizona) and melted off, twice with two different pads.

              how about this
3.5" Dual Action Flexible Backing Plate - A molded urethane backing plate for excellent flexibility and balance. If German carmakers think this backing plate is good enough to use on their top-of-the-line vehicles, you can bet it is the best plate ...

Yup, that's the same. Meguiar's made it very universal for many applications, including DA. See the adapter kit it comes with.

Does anyone have any experience using the cheaper versions vs. the pro Meguiar's version?
Beside the durability. Can you really tell the difference while working?

What do you mean the cheaper versions?

I have this one and used it for a while:

                        With adapter: http://www.autodetailingsolutions.net/da5816.html

At first it worked fine, but more recently the adapter has been coming out while buffing.

The adapter will get stuck into the G110 very tightly, but come loose from the plate easily, making removal very frustrating and complicated. I've not tried the Meguiar's one yet but plan to order it on my next shipment.

                            Ok.

Here is the picture of the 3" b plate.

It only mentions this is for sanding.

My Q is if this is ok to be used with G110 and does it have the Velcro on it to attach the 4" pads.

I'm 90% sure that it's OK to use for the G110 because they include the adapter for DAs. Meguiar's wouldn't do this if it wasn't OK.

Also I'm positive that it is Velcro as well. I don't see any other way for it to attach to the 4" pads that it is meant to be used with, so it would have to be Velcro.
