DA Polisher helpful tips or tricks

Do you have any helpful tips or tricks for using the DA polisher?

I kind of tried a different method to apply wax to the pad. When I start waxing a car I place an X of product across the pad as normal. If I'm waxing the hood for example, I cut the hood in half and place a small bead of wax on the second half of the hood. After spreading the wax on the initial side of the panel, I then tilt the polisher and pickup the bead of wax on the second half and continue waxing. I move the polisher away from the windshield to minimize splatter on the windshield and plastic.

This isn't a new concept.

What I like about it is, I can keep waxing and not have to shut down after each panel or two to apply more wax to pad. This should help in efficiency. I didn't try this on the sides of the car yet, just flat surfaces.

Could I use the same technique for a polish like #80 Speed Glaze that breaks down relatively quick? I don't think #83 would work for this idea, as #83 would sit on the paint for a few minutes while the first part of the panel is being worked.

That's sound's like a good idea. I wax my car the same way almost. The only thing I don't do is put wax on one part of the car while I'm waxing a different part of it. The reason I don't do that is because I'm afraid the wax that is sitting on that part of the car will set in longer and make a mark on the car.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated because I just got my g-100 yesterday and am eager to try it out this weekend when the rain stops. I've never used one before but hopefully with everything I've learned in this forum I'll be able to make a difference with it...I try to take some before/afters to see how things turn out too.

I guess one good tip is to clean your pads often. Don't let them get all gummed up with product. I believe we were told at NXT TI that we should clean the pad after doing each panel.

Here is a tip I learned this weekend the first time I used mine:

Never lift the pad off the hood while the polisher is running.

It took quite some time to clean the speed glaze off the windshield & wall.

That's a mistake you only make once. It's a real mess to clean up.

Haha well I'm glad I can hopefully avoid learning that one the hard way...But what do you guys use to clean your pads? Brushes?

I also have a rotary buffer. I put the pad (from the DA) on it and use a clean terry cloth towel to clean it. I brace the buffer on my thigh and then run the towel across the pad to take the product off. I learned this from Mike Phillips.

When you say DA do you mean a dual action or a rotary?

Yep the Porter Cable G-100 Dual Action Polisher. Maybe one day I'll get a rotary to try.

Another tip. If I notice product buildup on pad I use a terry towel and press the pad down on the towel with the machine off.
