  • Took apart the G110

    Hey there guys!

After attending on of Meguiars Saturday classes, I bought myself a used G110. IDK the history of the tool, but it works fine. I buffed 4 cars with it already, and it's working out great and still strong.

However, it makes a little chattering sometimes from the gears, so i took it apart. Upon taking it apart, i saw the gear box of the tool. The gears are covered in red grease i believe. I feel like rebuilding this area of the tool...

So my question is, what type of grease is this? Can I buy this grease like at a hardware store (home depot) or auto parts store?

Even though it saw no maintenance is needed, I want to do it.

I don't know what kind of grease it is but by taking it apart, I believe you just voided your warranty.

It's fine haha. I know for sure this thing is more than 1 year old, beyond the warranty coverage.

The grease has a candy red appearance, partially transparent. I might just clean this whole thing out and put in a new grease. Any suggestions?

Sounds kinda like automotive synthetic wheel bearing grease

Then I guess your fine! Never seen a red grease before but I dont see why a different grease wouldn't work.

I am sure there are many reasons a different grease wouldnt work.....

Are you sure the chattering isn't from the screws coming loose under the backing plate I know I have to tighten mine after every detail.

Hi guys, thanks for your replies.

automotive grease seems too thick maybe, but then again, it will stick well to the gears.

I spun the gears and it made the exact same sound. I think for now, I just want to add more grease into it, just need to know what type...

                Thanks for your input!

                  Re: Took apart the G110

Red grease is pretty common, I use it on my bearings for the car, it's usually a high temp (not sure if it's synthetic or not, mine is Valvoline Synthetic high temp grease).

I use the same grease mentioned on the gear assembly on my Harbor Freight rotary.

Check with a tool repair shop and ask what grease they would use in a similar application such as the Porter Cable 7424 or 7336. The same should work fine for you here. Otherwise we don't have any info available right now on the exact grease spec used here.

The chattering noise is most likely from the bearings. If so, fresh grease may help.

Just a suggestion, I would recommend using red lock tight upon assembly. This has proven to maintain longevity.

                          Re: Took apart the G110

I would suggest blue locktite vs the red because blue require only hand tools to disassemble if needed. Make sure there is no grease on hardware or it won't work. I would also take the advise of Mike Stops because the last thing you want is the grease becoming somewhat liquid and leaking out of the machine and onto the vehicle or even seeping throughout the machine and causing problems

Thanks for the reply. After typing in Google what type of grease the PC7424 uses, a website said red lithium grease. Planning to buy some Lucas Oil Red N Tacky grease. I'll keep you guys posted on how it goes.

I swear by Lucas Oil's gear oil, fuel system treatment, and oil stabilizer in my 93 Silverado. I even picked up their Slick Mist interior detailer and tire/trim dressing. It doesn't seem as durable as Ultimate Protectant, but it's not bad for under $10 a bottle.
