  • Questions about DAs in general

    Hi guys,

I am an avid fan of cars and have always loved modifying and taking care of them. When I got my first brand new car I didn't know how to properly maintain the car's paint and it resulted in some minor cob webbing, some swirls, some very light holographing, and some very light scratches. I have been using Meguiar's Scratch X 2.0, Meguiar's Ultimate Compound, Meguiar's Swirl X to help buff out the scratches, but the scratches are still there.

I am wondering if using something like a DA (G110V2) coupled with Meguiar's M105/M205 will achieve the results I am hoping for? I want the car's paint surface to be like the day the car was delivered to me. I've read that rotary buffers require experienced technicians to operate without messing up the paint, while the DA is considerably safer because of the different type of motions it produces.

So far I am considering purchasing the following:

    Meguiars G110V2
    Meguiars M10532
    Meguiars M20532
    Meguiars 9207
    Meguiars 8207

Will this setup be able to remove light swirls/holographing/cob webs and maybe even crows feet in the paint?

Should I start with the M105, then move to the M205, then move to using some sort of Meguiar's wax?

Any help is appreciative, as I am new to the DA/rotary buffing aspect of detailing. Also, can anyone else throw out other suggestions of Meguiar compounds in addition to what I have listed? Thanks.

Without knowing the exact condition of the paint, it would be unwise for me to give you a direction to go. You always want to use the least aggressive method possible, as it is easier to remove paint then it is to put it back.

If the the 205 is not aggressive enough to do the job, then obviously, you'll need the 105. These products should work well with an orbital polisher. I've never used 105/205, but I've heard good things about them

Actually, you should start with detailing clay.

What kind of car, any pics?

To be honest, most people have trouble removing swirls by hand at first, it is hard to do right without really being shown. So you may or may not 'need' the buffer, but it will certainly help.

And if you already have UC and SwirlX, they can be used with the buffer also. A few more pads might be good though.

Not only do you need more pads. I would also get a 7207 pad and some microfiber bonnets to remove your wax.

The car is a civic but the car I plan to work on has more damage in the paint than my car. The car I am going to work on is a highlander. I've read the tutorials on using uc and swirl x and while they do work they only work to an extent. It gets rid of most of the swirls and the scratches but they are still visible in some lighting in the right angle. As for the microfiber to get rid of the wax I have a bunch of towels I am planning to use. Would it be best for me to take pics of the scratches before I make my decision on the DA? So far I've heard about getting the orbital polisher but no thoughts on the DA. As for clay I know I will be starting with a basic wash then clay then move to compounds.

First off, yes, a tool like the G110v2 will make your life a whole lot easier and give you better, more consistent results overall.

We would, however, like to make some recommendations for you here:
            • Get at least 2 or 3 W8207 polishing pads
            • If you're using Ultimate Compound by hand now, stick with it on the G110v2 rather than stepping up to M105. UC is quite potent and the tool will give you a big step up in power from what you've been doing by hand. UC should be strong enough to accomplish what you need - remember, M105 is the single most aggressive liquid we make and it was designed to remove sanding marks via rotary buffer. It's probably overkill for most swirl correction jobs.
            • Microfiber bonnets over a cutting pad for use in wax removal is a personal preference, but not really necessary. From a personal perspective they're more of a pain than they're worth, and you run the risk of "overbuffing" and removing the majority of wax you just applied.

If you look through the pictures from our Saturday classes you'll picture after picture of black cars that have been beautifully corrected using Ultimate Compound on a G110v2. That's all we really use when teaching these classes, and last weekend we did this on an absolutely hammered black VW Jetta rental car. Plenty of people will tell you that VWs have very hard paint. That's either simply not the case, or UC is some darn potent stuff - that paint was horrible and it came out beautifully with UC, a W8207 pad and very little effort. UC is also much more user friendly on a D/A than M105, especially for a first time user.

M205, on the other hand, is just a dream to use. Absolutely incredible stuff.

              Michael,

Thank you for your kind help.

I will get the M105 and M205 along with my g110v2 because of free shipping and I might use it some time down the line, but those pictures on that jetta look AMAZING with the UC.

I will end up buying :

              G110V2 polisher
              w8207 x 3 or 4
              w9207 x 3 or 4
              UC x 1 or 2
              Swirl X x 1 or 2
              NXT 2.0 wax x 1 or 2
              Perhaps some microfiber bonnets.

              Wish me luck guys!!!

If you are in the US and buy from ADS, you can order a case of pads in different combos to save a few bucks. Might even have a package with SwirlX/UC or 205/10 in it.

Thanks a bunch! I placed the order from ADS and saved quite a bit from Amazon since ADS bundled the pads together and I could get free shipping on some other stuff along with the g110v2!!!

No problem... definately poke around there, and look at the different kits, etc. Might fit what you want, or order seperately.
