  • G110V2 on grooves.... HELP!

OK, so I have lurked around these forums for a while and have never registered, because I usually find what I need without posting. This time, I needed to....

I have the dual action polisher running quite well. The results so far are better than I expected except for the grooves or "style lines" on a vented hood.

The vent is not a scoop, but rather just a mesh filled opening that has a recessed 1cm wide groove around it. It is lower than the rest of the hood by about 3-4mm at most. My problem starts where the groove does, because I am having trouble getting into that tight area where the level changes and removing oxidation.

I am using a w8207 pad with 105. It works very well on flat or smooth surfaces by the way. I tried working the 105 into the grooves by hand with OK results, but nothing like what the DA produces on flatter areas.

FYI, I want to avoid a rotary at all costs (bad personal experience).

    Am I doing something wrong?
Should I keep at it with the current setup and angle the pad more?
Should I try w7207? (I read that it is a for DA's, but need to remove this stuff)

I searched and did not find a thread about this topic, but am sorry if I missed one ::flame proof suit on::

      Re: G110V2 on grooves.... HELP!

      First off, welcome to MOL.

If you've got a small, isolated area such as you've described, it may well be a case where hand application is going to be the best bet. Plenty of vehicles have areas that a buffer simply can not reach into and hand application is the only alternative.

Repeated buffing in an attempt to get down into this small recess, even with a D/A buffer, could lead to extreme thinning of the paint on the edge leading into the recess, and that potential is only going to be exaggerated if you try to do this with a cutting pad. Not only will a cutting pad offer more cut (well, duh) but since it's stiffer it will offer even less compliance and therefore even more stress on the surrounding edge. Best to avoid that scenario completely.

That said, M105 tends to work very well by hand when applied with a soft foam wax applicator pad.

Thanks for the advice. I will keep at it by hand.
If all else fails, I will just get my wetsanding supplies out, but I hope to avoid that too.
