  • New to Buffer/Polisher World

    Hello all!,

I recently purchased a cheap 6" Orbital Buffer "Vaper" (3,500 operations per minute) from Auto-Zone to apply SwirlX and NXT wax to my British Racing Green car. Considering I have been paying a lot of money to get it detailed, I am fairly happy with my results, but after investing some research time on the net it seems that the machine that I have purchased is nothing more than a butter-spreading knife. I am by no means a proffesional but enjoyed detailing my car a lot. My main goal is to remove swirl marks from the finish, and polish and wax the car regularly
Would you guys recommend I purchase another machine?. Which one is safe for someone like me to use (by safe, I mean not burn thur the paint)

    Thanks!!!

The G110v2 is pretty top of the line.

That said, your butter spread will be safe to play with for now, and the SwirlX and Nxt could be used with it. The new SMAT products seem to play a little better with the cheap polishers than the older products did, if you wanted to play with it.

Of course you can always play with it on a cheaper daily driver if you are nervous....

Like you stated, the orbital is a butter spreading knife. There will come a time that you will need/want to do paint correction. I would get the G110v2. It is a great machine. You will like it.

        Re: New to Buffer/Polisher World

Thank you for your replies and advise.
        Please bear with me again:
Being as impatient as I am, and as convinced as I am that I will not take any of my 3 cars to a detailer again (as I have enjoyed this a lot), I am going to proceed to buy an acceptable machine this week. Further research is pointing towards the G110v2 mentioned or the Porter Cable 7424XP.

My main concern is that the machine I purchase is fairly fool-proof. The Auto-zone machine seems pretty safe (I have searched the archives and do realize you can do damage with the wrong product and your hand), but in general, are either of the machines I am looking at least as safe as the Auto-Zone machine? I do not want to put a hole on the paint because my pinky finger pointed in the wrong direction.

        Thanks again!!

"butter-spreading knife"- I like that analogy! You will not go wrong if you purchase either the Megs or Porter Cable. It's almost impossible to mess your paint up with these machines. Just follow all the advice available on the Megs site and you'll be a detail guru in no time!

Yes, the G110 will be safe.

You probably want to pick up the "How to Get Show Car Results with the PC" DVD by Mike Phillips. I think autodetailingsolutions.com still sells it. It is about the older G100 machine, but the basic info is all the same. Just the newer versions of the pads are out now, and #80 is still a good product, or the new #205/SwirlX could be used.

Yes, the G110v2 is safe. There's a video on youtube of a detailer that takes his G110 to the hood of a Corvette and tries to inflict damage, but can't.

You'll like it.. I've used mine a few times now and I can't wait to use it more!
