  • G110v2 Extension cord size and gauge....

ok well i just got my new v2 and i want to buy a new extension cord... now i was thinking of these sizes lmk what you suggest...

    12 gauge 25ft
    14 gauge 50ft
    12 gauge 50ft

just wanna make sure i have no problems with the buffer and make sure it gets the right power without getting it too hot. cause of all the power problems they had with the g110v1..

let me knwo whats good to go with.. thanks

Go with the 12 gauge. There was a chart floating around that showed what gauge you should use based on the footage of the extension cord. I want to say the 25 would be good enough, but go for the 50 just to be safe.

so 12 gauge 50ft would be better then 12 25ft

12 gauge is over kill and a waste of money just to power a buffer. A G110 only draws 4.2 amps at max load. With those ratings a 16 gauge extension cord up to 100ft is perfectly fine. 14 gauge @ 50ft if you're splitting to power two or three things at once.

The lower the gauge number the thicker the wire and the more load it can take. Also the longer wire is the more resistance and voltage drop it will have.

Pages 2 & 3 of the G110v2 manual include the following information:

"When using an extension cord, be sure to use one heavy enough to carry the current your product will draw. An undersized cord will cause a drop in line voltage resulting in loss of power and overheating. The following table shows the correct size to use depending on cord length. If in doubt, use the next heavier gauge."

For 120 volt unit (and similar tools drawing up to 6 amps):

Total length of cord, in feet/Rating gauge of wire (AWG)
          0-25 ft / 18 gauge
          26-50 ft / 16 gauge
          51-100 ft / 16 gauge
          101-150 ft / 14 gauge

the whole extension cord thing really makes a difference...i had a 100 ft 18 gauge i use for my leaf blower...i switched it up to a 50 ft 12 gauge and the leaf blower has SOOO much more power and less resistance...do this for the g110 and you will see amazing results

Wouldn't you rather have overkill and knowing your cord is above and beyond what you need for that peace of mind? Plus what if you need a 12 gauge extension cord one time and you already have it because you bought it for your G110v2? You've saved money

thats exactly what i said to myself...plus, the thicker cords are a little harder to get tangled up

I am using a 25ft 16 gauge extension cord. I am not sure if this is alright.

You should be fine according to the chart that was posted. Remember, 16ga is heavier/has more current carrying capacity than 18ga.

I was trying to look for similar information in the manual of my G220 that I have bought recently, but there isn't any... Is the thickness of the cord less of an issue with the higher voltage, or is it still important? In the latter case, is there a similar little table available, by any chance? Many thanks!

                            SZLADOB:

You need less wire gauge (thickness) for higher volts on the same size motor because the amps will be lower.

Long lengths of wires create a voltage drop that raises the amps needed by the motor. This is based on percentage of the voltage being dropped by the cord.

In your case, your voltage is nearly twice ours (with amps nearly half). So you can use a smaller gauge than us every time. We draw 4.2 amps at 120 VAC, you draw approx. 2.2 amps at 220 VAC.

p.s. A larger gauge wire size is a lower number, a smaller gauge wire is a higher number. (i.e. 12 ga. is larger than 18 ga.)
