  • What did I do wrong?

I waxed my brother's black truck with my G110 and created some very faint holograms.
If I remember correctly- I primed the finishing pad with QD, poured on a spiral of NXT 2, worked in between speed 1-2, and cleaned on the fly after panel.

I didn't think a DA could make swirls.
So what did I most likely do wrong? Set too slow would be my guess. That or too little pressure.

Too little pressure or too slow shouldnt cause that, unless the pad got dry?

What do you mean by "cleaned on the fly after panel"? Did you just apply the NXT to a panel and immediately wipe it off? If so you didn't let it dry anywhere near long enough - you should apply NXT Tech Wax 2.0 to all the painted surfaces of the vehicle and then give it another 20 minutes or so (depending on ambient conditions) before doing the swipe test and ultimately wiping it off.

As for the application itself, something more in the speed 2-3 range is generally accepted (closer to 3, honestly) with light to moderate pressure; a bit more than just the weight of the machine. You want to make sure you cover each square inch of surface area a few times while applying this or any other wax, to ensure full and even coverage. Also, priming a pad prior to applying a wax isn't really necessary and could, under certain conditions, cause issues with drying.

I agree with Mike. Also what you believe may be holograms may be the smeard wax that may have not been dry enough to wipe off. Did you go over the already wiped sections to see if the "holograms" can be removed? Which pad did you use?

Whoops! I cleaned the pad on the fly.

There is no need for pad primming or cleaning the pads on the fly while waxing. If polishing then yes, it does help but not during waxing. What you probably got was just left over residue. Even I still get it on my cars after using NXT.

Re: What did I do wrong?

How long are you letting the wax dry? As we all know, black can sometimes be a bit finicky and if you take the NXT off too soon there is a chance for some light streaking. That is only compounded when it is applied too heavily (which it does NOT sound like you did) or if ambient temperature is low and/or humidity is high as both of these conditions will prolong the drying time.

Thinking about you cleaning the pad on the fly after each panel.......you may have applied a bit more product than needed, but it's hard to say without having seen it. Last year at SEMA we were prepping cars for Ford - a lot of cars! Now, we did them literally one right after the other, sort of assembly line fashion, but we waxed 39 cars with a single bottle of NXT using a G110/W9207 pad. Once that pad starts to get a bit "wet" with product you need to add very little to continue on. Keep in mind you aren't working with a diminishing abrasive or anything like that, so as long as you can transfer a film of product onto the surface, you're achieving the goal. Just make sure you let it dry fully.

                I agree.

I've seen that issue before too.
