  • G220 & Pad questions

    Hi All,

    Just ordered a G220

but have a couple of questions relating the pads to use...

The shop i ordered from have some w9000 finishing pads, which im assuming i will use with my NXT 2.0? is this correct?

they also have a w7000 cutting pad, is this suitable to use with swirl x? or do i need a w8006(?)

Ive searched the forums with mixed answers to the question...

thanks for any input and lookin fwd to taking the next step!

    Re: G220 & Pad questions

While Meguiar's has made it difficult for an average person to choose the right liquid product by releasing so many liquid products to the market, they have made life easier for users when it comes to choosing the right pads for the job.

Meguiar's only has three pads: Cutting, polishing, and finishing.

Any waxes or sealant is basically used with the finishing pad.

Cleaner waxes could be used with either a polishing pad or a finishing pad.

Polishes and cleaners are mainly used with the polishing pad. Sometimes, polishes and cleaners may be used with a cutting pad.

Cutting pad is mostly used with compound or the more aggressive polishes.

    Hope this helps.

So does that mean if I use the w7000 cutting pad with swirl x, I risk introducing buffer swirls compared to if i use the 8006 polishing pad? Basically my car has very minor swirls which occured at the dealership, I've tried to buff by hand with SwirlX and ScratchX 2.0 but due to (at the time) my lack of knowledge, I probably made it slightly worse

Since then I've learnt from my mistakes and want to fix my paint surface properly...

Also with applying the NXT 2.0 with the DA, how many passes do you normally make before letting the wax cure? and do you buff it off with the DA using the same pad you applied.. OR buff of with a MicroFibre/Fresh 9000 finishing pad??

      Thanks for your help

        Re: G220 & Pad questions

With SwirlX, you should be using the polishing pad. It is hard to say if you will get any buffing swirls from using SwirlX with a cutting pad. It depends on the paint you are working on, the pressure you are applying to the Dual Action Buffer, the speed of the Dual Action Buffer, the amount of product you have on the pad, etc. Generally, SwirlX is best with a polishing pad.

If you need more correcting power, Meguiar's has advised using a lighter pad with a more aggressive compound. This is more effective than using a less aggressive product with a more aggressive pad.

If you have managed to dull your paint using SwirlX or ScratchX 2.0, then perhaps your pad or paint surface isn't clean enough for the application. Either that or the paint you are working on is very soft.

If you are going to apply NXT 2.0 with a DA, work on a small section at a time. An example of that would be half a bonnet, half a door, one quarter panel or fender, etc. With a speed of 2 or 3, using a finishing pad, move the pad horizontally, then vertically, then once again horizontally. At this point the wax would have been applied very thinly and evenly.

To remove the polish or wax after you have worked it into the paint, you should use a quality Microfiber towel to remove the excess or residue.

        Good luck!

          thanks for your speedy replies!

just to clarify, would it be recommended if im not looking at removing deep swirls, and just minor swirls, to maybe use ScratchX 2.0 with a 9000 finishing pad? OR possibly even SwirlX with a 9000 finishing pad?

sorry for all the confusion, just want to get it right before i hit my pride and joy...

btw, the car in question is a 2008 Toyota Aurion (Camry for the USA) which im assuming has a clearcoat protection...in their listed "Diamond White" (yeah i know, white isnt the best colour, but was limited in options at the time of sale... Still love it none the less!!

Generally, you would want SwirlX with 8006 to be your mild combo.

Working in cleaners is a bit different than waxes. With cleaners, you want about a 12" 'squareish' area to 16", and move the machine slowly in that area.

With waxes, you can move a bit faster, and go as far as the product lets you. At first, it will be smaller. As the pad gets saturated, you can go a little further. Remember, you only need the thinnest coat of wax.

              Hi,

You would always want to use the least aggressive product to get the job done. Here is a list of products with the most aggressive one on the left and least aggressive one on the right:

Most aggressive to least aggressive -->

              Source: http://www.meguiarsonline.com/forums...ad.php?t=28407

According to the source, ScratchX 2.0 is more aggressive than SwirlX. So therefore you would want to avoid using ScratchX 2.0 if SwirlX gets the job done. ScratchX 2.0 is powerful enough to remove most random isolated deep scratches on most surface. SwirlX is great for lighter swirls.

Use SwirlX with your polishing pad and you should be fine.

Hello ! Is it OK to consider Swirl X as #205 and ScratchX as #105? Are they the same products?

No, SwirlX is closer to D151 and ScratchX isn't even close to M105. Ultimate Compound is more aggressive than ScratchX 2.0, but even UC isn't on the same level as M105. It is true, however, that all of these products make use of SMAT abrasives.

thanks for that clarification on SwirlX & UC vs M205 & M105...
I haven't got the chance to try M105 or M205 yet... but heard and seen great results at a Megs Car Clinic here in Jakarta, Indonesia..

What pad should be used with DC2? It is a pure polish so I thought a finishing pad should work as no cut at all is required or wanted (although I am very new at this stuff - so keep that in mind!).

                        Thanks!

You may be new at this, but your logic is spot on and brought you to the correct conclusion - use a finishing pad for a pure polish.

What about DC1, I would guess that a polishing pad would work - is a finishing pad too soft to really clean?

                            Thanks!

When using any paint cleaner to remove defects, including DC1, the polishing pad is the correct choice. Exceptions to this would be if you have paint that you already know to be extremely soft or delicate, or you just want to do a very light cleaning, perhaps just to remove a previous application of wax.
