  • Look at the pic and tell me which pad to use....

    Hi guys,

I'm getting close to detail my SUV and I need more info before I begin. I need to know which pad (size, brand, texture) to use for fixing this? I think I got these scratches from using the "California Duster" or the chamois.

I'll be using the M205 that comes free with the kit for now.

    Hey Ringo,

First of all, welcome to MOL!

I had to change your click-able links into embedded pictures because new members are not allowed to post click-able links until they reach 30 posts. that said, the link went to VERY large pictures and it will be hard for members to see them, is there any chance you could get the links to smaller versions (700 width or less) and post those? I will modify the original thread for you.

As for your question, that looks like you will need the W8207 Yellow Polishing pad, and possibly a product stronger than M205 for the deeper defects. Start by testing the M205 with the polishing pad, and if that doesn't do the job then I would suggest getting some ScratchX 2.0 or Ultimate Compound for your initial passes. Then you can finish with the M205 on either the same type of polishing pad, or a W9207 black finishing pad.

Just to add on to what Mark said, you could also try SwirlX which is in between M205 and ScatchX 2.0 if M205 isnt enough.

California Duster should not be scratching your paint if you use the proper technique for using it. The nap should be hardly touching your paint, allow it to drape over it lightly and gently move the handle towards the end of the panel. The California Duster needs no pressure to pick up dust and it works better the dirtier it gets.

Thanks for fixing it for me Mark. I went ahead to changed the width to 700 in Photobucket.

You suggested the 7" pad,but wouldn't it be to large to do any cutting? I was thinking more of the LC CSS 5.5 /Meg's 6.5 pads for cutting, but you are the expert so I'll go with your suggestion.

I read somewhere that the M205 should be use with the Meg's Soft Buff 2.0 Black for better result, is that true?

Ok. I'll go with this route:

          - Meg's 7" Yellow with SwirlX/ScratchX 2.0 for isolated scratches (Assuming M205 + Yellow pad doesn't help).

          - Meg's 7" Black with M205 for the entire vehicle.

          - Meg's 7" Black with NXT 2.0 paste for waxing.

          Good enough?

That sounds like a good start.
As far as the CD is concerned I love them and have used them for over 30 years and never experienced any scratches from them.
On the other hand a few people hate them and claim they scratch their paint.
If you do a search you can read up on peoples opinion about them.

              Hi Mario,

You have used a California Duster for over 30 years???? Wow! When did you start using one?

I have had one since the mid-1990's, and also have 2 of the Meguiar's versions that are now discontinued.

I don't know how they looked like in the Mid-1970 because they were not in the market yet!! California Duster were introduced and have been making them since 1989!!!

Hum, I remember using them a long time ago.
I could swear it was a CD.
                            Maybe it was somethig else.

Well I just got off the phone with the CD people and I was right.
They started out as "Beverly Hills Auto Accessories" and the CD has been around since the late '70's.
