  • Need help on Pads...

Ok, so I'm buying the G110 and need some suggestions on which Lake Country pads to get. I have some light swirl marks on my Black 07 G6 GTP that I'm going apply Scratch X 2.0 to but I'm not sure which pads to use. Also, I'm going to be using the NXT 2.0 wax.

So far from what I can gather, I need either an Orange or White pad for the ScratchX 2.0. Then I need a red or gold finish pad for the NXT 2.0 wax. Am I on the right track? Do I need any other pads? Also, should I get some micro fiber bonnets for cleaning the wax or do that by hand with MF towels? Any other suggestions would be great.

    Thanks for entertaining my questions.

Did you get a kit with just the G110? Or a package that includes the Meguiar's pads as well?

If not I'd recommend for a beginner just sticking within the system and picking up six (6) Meguiar's 2.0 pads...three polishing and three finishing (tan and black). You can throw in a burgundy cutting pad for severe defects but if you're only going to use SwirlX and not something stronger like Ultimate Compound, M105, etc than you'll be limited more by product than pad choice.

As for wax removal I've seen people use microfiber bonnets and others fold up a microfiber towel and place it under the finishing pad and remove that way.

No, no kit, just the standard G110 stuff. Perhaps you had a typo, but I'm using ScratchX 2.0, no the Swirl X. Will that not be strong enough to take out the light scratches and swirls? Nothing can catch my finger nail, so it shouldn't be too deep. Do I need to take the ScratchX 2.0 back and get some Ultimate Compound instead?

Also, any links for the Meg's pads? I've heard never ending good things about the LC pads. Thought I'd go with what I heard the most.

The Lake Country CCS pads are my pads of choice. There are many different "spec" CCS pads sold by ADS, Autogeek, PAC, etc each with different build specifications requested by the seller. They even sometimes have slightly different color/cut ratios so it can get confusing. My personal preference is for the ADS-spec CCS pads.

If you are buying a Meg's G110 and using all their products as a beginner it's probably simpler to follow the three pad setup of the Meguiar's 2.0 system...burgundy cutting, tan polishing, and black finishing. Very little confusion or chance to mix up pads and being this is a Meguiar's site, the actual manufacturer's are here to help with your specific questions. Do a search for Meguiar's 2.0 pads and you'll find hundreds of threads.

If you're dead-set on the CCS pads, then PM and I'll answer anything you'd like to know...

Yeah, that's probably great advice for a super-noob when it comes to enhanced detailing. Having a black car I now have the urge to really step up how much effort I put into making my car look the best. So, as I learn more, I'll adventure more, but for now, sticking with the same brand products is probably best. Thanks again for you input!!

Like I said I think it's the best advice for someone who is just starting out and already decided on a G110. The CCS pad lineup allows you to fine tune the detailing/polishing process with a wide variance in pad construction and mechanical abrasiveness but for now, the three-pad setup of Meguiar's is a great start.

Just as an FYI, I'd probably start with a minimum of 2 cutting pads, 3 polishing, and 2 or 3 finishing pads. You never want to have just one pad of anything because if it gets dirty/clogged/contaminated/damaged it's not like you can run to the corner store and get another one. In addition, even with cleaning on the fly, you'll need at least 2 pads of anything to cover a whole car during each polishing step. The recommended minimum is something similar to what I mentioned above.
